I have a pair of Blue tounges that I have been raising since they were babies, about 1.5 years. I was wondering if I could post up a few pics and get your opinion on their sexes, I belive I have a pair because of the difference in body size and shape. I just want to be sure

To me, the one with the thin bands is Merauke, and the one with the thick bands is some type of Eastern Mix.

The thick band one is really interesting, very yellow coloring. It honestly looks like someone mixed a Yellow Tanimbar with an Eastern to me. Can't wait for other opinions on this.

The thin banded one looks like a very nice Merauke. If this is the one you think is female, I hope you manage to breed her. Merauke babies are always wonderful to see, and not very common.

Other people should soon appear to give their opinions on what types you have. Sexes however cannot be determined by picture, and their size/shape difference is due to them being different subspecies. When they go potty, watch for hemipenes averting or sperm plugs. This means male. Otherwise you need to go by behavior.

Do you take them out daily? I find after about 5 minutes out of the tank, the lizards tend to poo. Then just check for plugs. They don't always drop them though, so no guarantees.

However, I do advocate housing BTS separately. We get several people a year who come onto the forum saying 'I housed my 2 BTS together for 2 years and they're bestest friends and today one bit the others leg and tail off!"

Most BTS are just not good at living with each other.

Looks like a meraukish (top one), Tiliqua gigas evanescens and a northern mix, Tiliqua scincoides intermedia.

That Merauke looking one looks very much like my Merauke Chuff without the kinked up tail and spinal dent! Almost the same colouring, though Chuff's are a little wider thatn your guy's bands. Gorgeous! :D

What are your temps at? Because my guy drops plugs when it gets warm/thaws outside. (even tho' his cage is always pretty much the same, he is really keyed on the outside temps somehow!)
Summer was when I first noticed his plugs, and he actually dropped some about a week and a half ago when we got really warm weather here and it felt like spring for a few days.
Check out Page 6 of Off Topic Thread 12 about half way down for a pic and example of Chuff's poop and plugs, so you know what to look for.

your second skink, I have no idea, kinda looks like a mutt, but pretty yellow colour! Welcome to BTS.net, by the way, and you can never post too many pics! :btsnet2: :ryo:

On first looking at the pictures I reckon the pics 1,2and 3 are of a Merauke, not a clue as to sex. The other one looks like an IJxTanimbar again no clue as to sex, thats a nice colour mix on the second one
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

Welcome to the forum ... :ohyes: another Vermonter! :woo:
I am guessing Merauke on the first and some sort of Northern cross (but crossed with what I don't know) on the second. That second one is quite the mystery. If you are not seeing sperm plugs you can always take your blueys out and put them on the floor. Get yourself a birds eye view when they poop. Sometimes the hemipenes will drop out when they have an evacuation. Yes I know ... not very pretty but it works. Of course you may not be seeing plugs because you have girls. Good luck with your identifications.

Welcome to the forum! You have some cuties there! We love pictures so you must know about the picture posting law!!! :ohyes:
I do have to recommend you read the caresheet regarding crossing different types of blueys. Also, I'll echo the part about housing them in separate tanks. We've seen some really sad pictures of skinkies wounding each other---even after sharing a tank for years.

They actually have their own tanks, they were together because I was cleaning the other one out.

Where did you get the mixed looking one? Looks like one of Ray's -- the yellow "mystery" bluey he thought to be yellow tanimbar was mated to his other yellow tanimbar, and the babies came out looking like this -- although I haven't seen an adult, only the juveniles...

Here's a picture of one of those babies. I thought the mystery bluey he had was mostly eastern (which I almost bought for Enzo but wasn't sure), but he insisted it was tanimbar and went ahead and bred them and the babies came out looking like this!

Image

They'd be grown up now, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them turned out like this....

Very strange. Got to love genetics and ressesive traits. This is a great example that shows the danger of hybridization.

Now we need Ray to come here and talk to us about his BTS. It would be neat if this ended up being one of his old BTS. I'm glad others agree with the Tanny part of my suggestion ^.^ I'm not a complete fool!

It's sort of a sensitive topic....the animal he bought I originally was actually GOING to buy for Enzo. But since I couldn't tell 100% whether or not he was Eastern, I passed. I had asked Ray's opinion while trying to decide and he thought it was tanimbar. After I didn't get it (because I couldn't prove what it was), Ray bought it for a breeder for his yellow tanny! We had a disagreement and still disagree about the whole thing (both about what species it is, and about breeding it to his tanimbars) but there is no bad blood. We just had to agree to disagree. Not to stir anything up of course, but I think these baby pictures are a pretty good indication that the animal is NOT a tanimbar...just my opinion of course. :chin:
