Found my "steve" dead today..

Postby genkid » Mon Jan 21, 2008 1:36 pm

This afternoon I found my African Red Fire Skink dead. :( He was just laying in the same spot for so long today that I tried to wake him by tapping on the screen..which usually works. I called his name and gave him a little poke, but it was obvious he was gone. We only had him about a year. I knew he was acting strange..i mentioned it in a post not too long ago. I chalked it up to brumation. He hadn't been eating. Yesterday he was lying in his water dish and I needed to fill it up, so I poured the water in while he was lying in it. He jumped out and had a little fit, but that wasn't unusual for him. Poor Steve.. This is my most recent picture of him. (taken a few weeks ago) Image[/img]

So sorry to hear of your loss... He was a very handsome guy (and obviously very well cared for).

We have three of these little fire skinks (a male and two females -- hoping for babies this spring), so I know how cute and endearing they are!

If we do manage to get any babies, and you are interested, we would be honored to send you one or two (if my son will part with them -- they are "technically" his!) The adults are captive bred, and were breeders for their previous owner. I'll post here if they breed for us.

Thanks for all the sympathy- not everyone can understand- just other "skinkers". To answer a few of you- no I don't know what the cause was. I did not have anything checked out by a vet. We cremated him and will bury his ashes when the ground thaws out here. I keep wondering what might have gone wrong- can't keep dwelling on it though. I know he had a good life with us. Thanks again.

Thanks, that is very sweet of you. Let me know if you get any babies. How are they to handle when they are captive breed? Mine was wild-caught..i think and he was a bugger to handle. I'll check with my son in the meantime and see if this what he'd like to do too. He is already after me to replace "steve" and I've got him to hold off til warmer weather. (it's so hard to find any good reptiles in the winter here- central PA; can't ship in this cold & most babies are born in spring etc...) Thanks again.

Unfortunately a lot of wild caught animals die within the first year (I think the statistic was like 80%). They often come in with a heavy internal parasite load that ends up taking them when you add the stress of captivity. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss! Steve was beautiful, and you obviously loved him very much.
