Yet another post .. Crusty eyes?

Postby BlueyBabe » Sat Jan 26, 2008 12:08 pm

I have another question about my baby Hershal ...

Well around Hershal's eyes, they are crusty looking. Sometimes in the morning he can not open his eye or eyes all the way. Then after awhile he opens them up ....

What should I do? He acts fine and is very active and loves his food ... should I just leave his eyes alone?

Last time he shed (which was about 4 weeks ago), the shed cleared his eyes up .. there was no cust stuff. Then about 2 weeks ago that crust started to come back again ....

Thanks.

In my opinion, you really need to just make the effort to get him to a proper herp vet if nothing else, for a check up!!

Can you post pics of his eyes?

We have an vet about 5 min away from were I live to. A reptile vet comes in on Tuesdays and Thursdays! (I JUST learned this) So that is very good!

My mom said she will make an appontment for Pink, my chinese water dragon. (He has an absese under his eye .. he had this when we got him)

I will ask my mom if she can also make an appontment for Hershal too. I will make sure the reptile vet cheak his eyes, and mouth rot. I will also try to get some of his poo for an fecal exam ... :)

Is there anything else I should make the vet cheak while I am there? How much do you think the vet bill will be? Right now I have $45 on me ... will that cover the bill for an cheak up?

Thanks for the help!!

What type of UVB bulb are you using? Some of the compacts are too strong and burn the eyes. I had that problem with Tattoo when I first brought him home. Went out and bought the most expensive combo hood I could find and the new bulbs were untested and burned his eyes. Same thing happened to Hijinks and Ping. The good news is they did recover nicely. And yes post a picture if you can.

Plus, I have no clue how to load them onto BTS.NET .... could you maybe tell me? :)

Tattoo, I am unsure of the wattage of the bulb. See the bulb we bought for hershal was the wrong type, (UVA .. dumb pet store), when we brought the bulb home it blew. So I used my pacman frog extra bulb. (I know this is an UVA .. and not to much of an wattage)

What is the highest wattage I can have? I will ask my mom and see what she may think the wattage is ...

Tattoo, when your skink's eyes got burned, was the part around the eye crustly looking?

Thanks.

Yes the eyes were usually dry looking and and hard to open. I am not talking about UVA light. UVB is the florescent type ... does not give off heat. It is the substitute for sun for reptiles that live indoors.

Okay then. Yes I know you are not talking about UVA light .. I was just saying that is what he has before for a few hours before it blew ....

Tattoo, what was the wattage of your UVB light ...?

It was a Zilla desert series T5 compact florescent. I can't remember what Hijinks had but she also had burned eyes from a compact florescent. What type do you have?

I have no clue what my skink's bulb is .... like I said before it was a spare for my pacman frog. The bulb was out of the box. :(

Next week we are going to the pet store ... there I shall buy an new UVB bulb. What brand and wattage should I buy?

I am not going to buy an compact one .. one of those $50 dollar ones .... if they were not so much money then I would buy one ... :)

Tattoo, can you also post an picture of your skink's eyes when you had the wrong wattage bulb please? Before and after pictures plase and thank you. :) :) :) :)

Zoo Med makes a good bulb called Reptisun. Strength depends on how high your enclosure is. If you have a low enclosure and no screen you could use reptisun 5.0. If you have a taller enclosure and use a screen I would get a Reptisun 10.0. Here is a picture of Tattoo's eyes with the bad bulb. This was right after a shed and at times it was worse.

Emma ... is your florescent a compact type? Compact is not a name brand but refers to the size of the bulb. If it is just turn it off for a couple of days and see what happens. You can also try some human eye ointment (no medication just sterile lubricant for very dry eyes white petrolatum and mineral oil) and rub it on the outside of the eye. Any drug store should have it over the counter. If these things don't solve your problem you should go to the vet for an exam. Does this picture look like your skink's eye problem?

My cage for Hershal is taller and has an lid .. so I will buy the second one you listed. :)

Hershal's eyes do not look like Tattoo's eyes do .... Hershal's eyes are not dryed-out looking ... just crusty.

So I am not sure if it is the bulb or not ... what do you think?

Man, I wish my camera didn't stink so bad at taking up-close pictures .. sorry. :(

When he shed last, his eye crust went away. (The last 2 or 1 week the crust has come back) He may have an eye infection then ...

Thank you for all the help Tattoo! :)

Post pictures of your skinks if you want to .. I love pictures!

he has conjuctivitis....

do a search for numerous other posts on this subject and all will be revealed.

He will probably need an ointment from a vet.

it certainly does sound like conjunctivitis.

Be very careful and do not let any eye problems persist. Eyes ears and nasal cavity is all linked up like in humans and even if you think you may have tackled the problem, if it travels through the head - you could be in for more problems, ALOT more.

Hi.

So Hershal, my BTS has conjuctivitis?

How soon should I take him to the vet? Is there anything I can do to help him while we wate for a vet cheakup? My mom sais she will call the vet tommorow and make an appontment for him ... (the reptile vet comes in on Thursday and Tuesday ..)

Anything else I can do for my babe??

Thanks for your help ...

well first off, the search function is located in the menu at the top of this forum page.

In regards to the vet, let's say you had conjuctivitis, would you wait long to go to the docs? I know I wouldn't. But what if it's not Conjunctivitis and it's something else? we can guess from your description but without seeing the problem it's difficult. Also - We're not vets.

As I said earlier: "Be very careful and do not let any eye problems persist. the Eyes, the ears and the nasal cavity is all linked up just like it is in humans, and even if you think you may have tackled the problem, if you haven't and it travels through the head - you could be in for more problems, ALOT more."

So in saying that - it'd be better for all if you got him off to the vet ASAP.
