New Member New Skink

Postby picklette » Mon Jan 28, 2008 10:39 am

Hi I'm new around here and have just bought my first BTS!
The pet shop didn't have a clue (naturally for your typical UK petshop), when I asked what type she was they just gave me a funny look and said "Blue tongued skink"
She looks like an indo to me though, oh that was the other thing despite her being 3 years old with a narrow head and never having dropped a sperm plug they were convinced she was male.
When I asked what they'd been feeding her on they said bananas and cat food. Any greens? No, just bananas and cat food!
So anyway enough of my rambling, here is Sullivan:

That is an adorable BTS! In the second picture she looks like shes smileing. Hope my little Indo looks that adorable when he's all grown up, heheh.

:) Thanks so much for the nice welcome!
Yes I will try to get an aerial shot for you, I'm only guessing on the species based on the pictures on the main site, that's what she looks most like.

Jasjm27, thank you for your kind comments, I will certainly try to get more glamour shots of my little baby in the future and inundate you guys with them.

I've read, re-read and read the caresheet again and I dare to say I'll be a frequent visitor to that particular part of the site, she's had enough slapdash care in the past poor thingy!

nothing wrong with feeding your bluey Bananas and cat or dog food.

Blueys dont' naturally go out and look for pumpkin, lettuce, beans etc... they eat insects, grubs, snails etc... with the occasional plant matter. Doesn't mean that vegies aren't good for them. I just mean that the diet your bluey was on wasn't bad.

Your Bluey looks like it's healthy, and I agree with what most people have said - that second pic is a very cool pic!

Say Cheese!

But remember that a lot of blueys perish in the wild when they can't find what they need to eat to survive. Cat food and bananas doesn't contain everything they need ---- calcium for example! But they can live a long time on it. Blasted blueys and their insane hardiness that makes people thing they can live on crappy food!! Bananas I think should be an every now and again food, and I think cat food should be used sparingly. Just my opinion of course. :weirdo:

I agree with Saille, I love her face! It's a beauitful animal. I hope we will be treated to more pictures in the future.

Most dog food has calcium and various other nutrients added to it. And when talking about Wild blueys - the main reason food would be hard to find is due to industrialisation and Man clearing out the land. other than that drought plays a big role, preditors also play a big role, but I think you'll find that blueys do alright in the wild. They (like other reptiles) can go without food for a long time, but starvation and malnutrition isn't really a problem here in Oz.

In saying that - there are obvious cases like Ians rescues, or WC imports that you guys get from Indo etc...

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that vegies are bad, I'm just saying that feeding your bluey dog or cat food isn't a bad thing. I'm pretty sure that Andrew feeds his guys dog food.

It's not a bad thing, but I'm not even close to being convinced that a sole diet of cat food and bananas is adequate. And cat/dog food having calcium? It's a MINUTE amount if any. Not all has it.
