Newbie looking for tanimbars

Postby Johelian » Mon Jan 28, 2008 12:15 pm

Hello,
My name is Jo, and I wandered over here on the recommendation of Celeste - Im another big prehensile-tailed skink fan, and have just had my first baby skinky born earlier this month :)

Im after a pair of baby Silver tanimbars - however, I live in the UK. Since we seem to be VERY lax on distinguishing subspecies in the UK (most websites will just advertise as Tiliqua spp.), I really want to make sure that Im speaking to someone reliable so that I get what I want. Can anyone supply me with breeder names and whatnot? I can get to European shows without too much hassle, so if anyone knows breeders that travel to the likes of Hamm etc then they will do fine.

Many thanks,
Jo

HI JO! Welcome to the BTS.net forums! I am sure you will find great info here and, hopefully, find a reliable breeder in the Euro area...I have not heard of any at the moment...

I do know that we have a few breeders and experts here that would be able to help correctly identify animals if you can get pictures of the parents of the animals...or the animal itself as a minimum. :)

I think I have seen one member "Johan" that might have some breeding pairs of Tanimbars...otherwise I have discovered that it isn't all that hard to have animals shipped between the US and Europe...not cheap, but not too hard. Celeste has good contacts for that and could probably help you out...they were very responsive for me.

Other then that, I believe that Ray Gurgui has Silvers:

http://community-2.webtv.net/rgurgui/ThunderBayHerp/

and I know that Andrew Seike has them...don't know if any will be available, but they were last year!

http://seikereptiles.com/SeikeReptiles/index.html

If you email Andrew, you might want to try to PM him here on the site...it seems his email is down?

I'm not sure of either of them will ship to Europe, but it never hurts to ask!

Congratulations on your baby; I love PTS. I've never even gotten to see one in real life though. :(

Who had a Tanimbar on here who lived in (I think) the UK. Someone did; I can't remember who.

Luckily, chimaerea is a very distinct species, study a bunch of 50 or more pictures, and you will get it down pact.

Was it gloom_kitty with Loki? I think she said he was sold as a Northern but the forum consensus was that he's a tanny. http://www.bluetongueskinks.net/forum/v ... p?p=257406

Many thanks for the replies :) I have seen a couple of recognised-tanimbars for sale in the UK, but they have been of the yellow variety and already adult - I would love to get a couple of babies directly from a breeder. Im really struggling to find breeders in the UK!

Lol, welcome to the addiction. Tanimbars are beautiful and often nasty all at the same time. But really a joy once you win them over. Good luck finding a pair!

Hey, Jo!

Welcome to the BTS site!

For everyone else: if Jo can handle Corucia, I guarantee ya she can handle a grumpy BTS! ;-) ;-)

Poo, tannies aren't mean. People are just wusses ^.^ I love my little tannies. A bit of attitude is good for a skink. :D

They tame down wonderfully if you raise them from neonates.

Heh, I think no matter how tame a Tanimbar becomes, they aren't normally as tame as many other species. They always backslide a little in my experience. :hehe:

But they're still awesome!

Hey all, thanks for all of your support :) I watched the video of the aggressive little tanimbar on this site - tremendous the amount of effort that goes into it, lol! I have to say though they are easily my favourite out all of the other subspecies (though shingles have a special place in my heart), so I'm happy to work a little harder with them! As Celeste mentioned I have one cage full of permanently angry monkey tailed skinks and another female currently on high-defense mode that attacks me on sight, so Im am well used to being abused by my lizards lol.

Man, I remember reading all about that in one of Celeste's posts....I've heard they've got a nasty bite too -- probably even worse than a BTS considering their size.... :bad:

Wow! I've never heard of an angry PTS. They always look so cute, cuddley, and sedate. I really want one someday...
