Northern Breeding Help.

Postby Hockeyrulz48 » Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:32 pm

Alright today I put my two Blueys together and I got some interesting responses by them. First the circled each other. One of my blueys was waving her/his tail. Not sure on the sex. My other blueys is a male as you can see of what he dropped after five minutes of being in the tank with the other bluey. I was lucky I was right their.
So now I know I have one male. My other bluey (hope it is a female) is either a male or a very agressive female. She wags her tale like a female but the everytime the male get's near he/her bits him near the back like and the tail. Any explanation on why this is happening? Thanks

Yep, the picture is a sperm plug. I just copied and pasted the URL. Try editing and putting it on a separate line?

Wagging tail indicates female. Were they cooled? They just might not be ready to mate.

Wagging tail DOES NOT always indicate a female.

I have 7 male blotchies and have witnessed atleast 3 of them wag their tail when confronted with another male during breeding season. I know all these guys are males cuz i have witnessed them drop plugs, yet they wag their tail. Granted this is what females do to show that they are interested - but males also do it.

Well whenever the male gets close the other wags her/his tail. I am just trying to determine sex right now. They were partially cooled. What do you all recomend I do?

Hmmm, maybe wagging tails is just a sign of submission then?

Try once a week,or evry third day, you may or may not have a pair, or she may not be ready yet,or he missed his chance and she's not best pleased, like "YOU should of been here last week"

Well I am thinking she is not pleased and is saying your missed your chance. When I put them together today she/he sat their and wagged her/his tail. The male stared and then walked around the cage he came over to him/her and nudged her/him in the area were the sexual organs are, she just sat their and wagged her tail. The male did not do anything, at one point he was in a perfect position to make the breeding bite but did not. After about 20 minutes the male came close again and the other skink opened her/his mouth and just sat their with it open. What do you all think?

well, generally breeding doesn't happen until spring. Isn't it winter there now? Granted it may be coming up to spring, but from what you've said - it seems like you may actually have a male and a female, but the male isn't interested. have these 2 been cooled down? Does the male walk in a jerky motion around the female?

It is starting to warm up here, winter has about a month left, you think that is that problem? They kinda have been cooled, I was worried about dropping the temps and not feeding them. How do you personally cool them? The male looks at her and yes sometimes does walk with a jerky motion.

well in regards to cooling, I turn my lights off and stop feeding them. However - my guys don't cool properly - so I may need to put them outside over winter. I'm not how cold it gets where you are so you'll have to judge from the info on the caresheet.

turning the lights off should do it though. After all you have northerns and they don't need as much cooling as do My easterns or Blotchies.

Jerky motion is another sign that you may infact have a pair - however I've seen this also happen with 2 males. I'd try introducing them once a week and just watch. Have you cleared out the enclosure of water bowls etc...? Perhaps introduce them on an area like the living room floor. An open space.

no probs! I can tell you that 17oC is probably the max temp you would want for them though.
