new skink owner

Postby darklord6 » Fri Feb 01, 2008 7:57 pm

hi everyone,
i reacently got a my first bts a baby irian jaya , at lll reptile, he about 5-6inches and hes doing great, he is eating, burrowing climbing doing other Bts stuff.
i have two questions is it ok to give them collard, turnip and mustard greens because i give that to my torts, so i was wondering if its ok to give to the bts
and this might sound weird but how do your baby and adult bts breath? to me it looks like mine takes 4 or 5 quick short breaths then stops and then continues, is this normal because my beardies dont do that, and i hope hes not sick because hes doing fine, eating everyday, he has clear eyes, and nostrols, hes pooping, the only thing that about him is that hes shedding, coud it be that hisnostrols are clogged with shedded skin?i just want make sure its okbecause i dont want anything to be wrong with him, the humdity is fine and so is the temp and hes on aspen bedding
thanks
Darklord

WELCOME!

Collard, turnip, and mustard greens, EXCELLENT!

Breathing sounds normal to me as long as his eyes, nose, and mouth are clear you should be fine.

Pictures are the law so get em up.

breathing is fine - I normally watch my guys and they are breathing the same way - and they are all fine. In regards to the greens, they are fine to give to your bluey.

Check out the caresheet (the link is at the top of the main page). It'll have the info you need, plus there are food charts also available which tell you the good and bad stuff for your bluey.

Just remember - they don't have a vegie shop in the wild - so there's no need to go to massive lengths to feed them.

Welcome to the boards! It sounds like you're taking good care of your baby. What did you name him/her?

Welcome! We want pictures!

Collard greens are great to feed! Full of calcium and good stuff. Others are great too.

Breathing sounds fine. My northern breaths funny from past trauma, but so long as there's no signs of illness, don't panic.

shingleback - I'm telling you man, Mix up some green beans, corn, carrotts, cabbage, mixed berries, calcium powder (if needed), Mushies in a blender til it's almost a liquid - then add 2 little single serve tins of turkey cat food. You're blueys will eat it straight away!

I think I'll try to blend greens like that for my skink too. He manages to eat everything but the greens with incredible precision. LOL

doing it this way means that they can't distinguish between meat and vegie. Today I fed them and left the mushies out and added a full banana. Oh - I also left out the egg - As with the other mix - they scoffed it down!

I'm using Fancy feast - Both Turkey cassarole and turkey prime fillet.

Welcome!

http://bluetongueskinks.net/care.htm

My personal opinion of course, but I would go with something much higher grade than fancy feast! Just look for foods with no byproducts and as natural as possible.

Spot's Stew is excellent. Wellness, Merrick and Evo are a few others.

+ 2.2 Irian Jaya (Slurpy, Nona, Sassy, Cool Moe Dee)
+ 1.1 Eastern (Eugene, Enzo)
+ 1.2 Northern (Niko, Pearl, Peach)
+ 1.0 Tanimbar Island (TQ)

i disagree - however i'm open to the possibility that the fancy feast you get in the states is inferior to what we get in Australia. It seems Americas meat is substandard in comparison to Australias. I'm not sure why this would be, but i've heard from Numerous sources (Americans Included) that say Australian meat is Much better quality than American.

Also, from the pics i've seen of Spots stew, it's mostly gravy with the occasional floating bit of giblet that's meant to be passed off as meat.

I would love it if someone on this site (american) could get some fancy feast and take a pic of it so I can compare it to what we have here. Also along with the pic if said person can also supply the ingredients we can compare!

any takers?

I meant pic of the actual food. :P

Thx for posting the ingredients though - I'll compare it to a turkey one I have.

First off though - the packaging is different. Not alot but a little.
