Astro Adventure!

Postby RocketRocks » Tue Feb 05, 2008 12:31 am

This is a true story that happened a couple of months ago. I don't have any pictures, but it's an entertaining story.

I was sitting in my room reading when suddenly I hear this rustling in my brother's room next door. It gets louder and I realize it sounds like someone was in there opening and closing the window blinds. I knew my Dad was in his room and my Mom was cooking dinner so I assumed it was my brother... Until I heard him say something on the other side of the house.
I thought it must be a big bug then and I forgot about it.

About half an hour later my brother goes to play with his skink, Astro, and discovers that Astro has mysteriously vanished. The lid was still closed, but we noticed a small hole in the mesh on one side that appeared to be too small for Astro. We were panicking and searching his room all over on the floor, since his door was closed and Astro can't squeeze under a door.
Suddenly we hear a hiss, coming from above us. Confused we turn back toward Astro's cage. When nothing happened we went back to the floor. But then we heard the same hiss again. Standing up we were very still and waiting for Astro to hiss again. Sure enough we heard it, and some rummaging, coming from the window. We looked closed and found a skink tail sticking out of the blinds. Attached to the tail on the window ledge was a very angry Astro.

We took her down and were relieved to find her alright, but we still couldn't figure out how she got there. Then I remembered all the noise I heard and realized she had climbed out of her cage, onto the top screen and up farther still into the window. She climbed a good two feet! Since then we've secured the screen and have been more alert to strange noises, just in case Astro tries something like that again. :D

Good example of their climbing abilities! Many people assume it could never happen....

When you think about it, BTS don't have a lot to do in their cage but sleep and figure out how to get out... :hehe:

And once they do it, they don't forget.

I learned this year that baby BTS can climb smooth styrofoam in seconds...once one did it, they all started doing it!

My IJs are incredibly adept at pushing the front glass out of their tanks. I have to get pretty creative when securing them now!

Yeah, I have that custom corner unit and the front glass is held on by cabinet catches. The guy who made them I think was still perfecting the technique. He described a way that I can alter then to put a locking mechanism on, but its going to be hard with the glass in.
Either way, currently if my skinks push hard enough on them, they can escape. I have some velcro on there temporarily until I figure out a solution. The spacer is currently being converted into a cage, and will have the locking mechanism already built, so I'll have a visual aide for altering the other two.

Here are some old photos of my cages, just to give an idea of what I'm talking about. That whole front glass piece comes off.......

I see now! That sounded so strange, "they push the glass OUT of their tanks"

Your setups are so neat -- I like the corner aspect of them. I'm surprised the guy doesn't offer some type of free fix...

Your blueys got out from the top part of that? Or the bottom?

The front of each unit is a door, so if the blueys push hard from the inside, they can actually push the door open.

I meant the higher enclosures. Did you have any get out from the highest one?

Sorry I didn't make myself clear in the last post.

Yes. Once. She pushed the glass out and fell to another cage that was about 2 feet below her cage. I was lucky that she landed there, and didn't fall all the way to the ground. I currently have the cage doors secured with velcro, which seems to be holding. I'm in the process of figuring out another system that will hold and still look nice.

He would fix them, but he's about 9 hours away and the cages don't break down to ship. I would bring them with me to the expo and have him fix them there, but that would just be too much hassle. I'll manage with them and hopefully figure out something that works.

Tarzan once squeezed out of a small hole for the light cord in his tank and then somehow managed to scale the vertical surface of the OUTSIDE of his tank and pull himself up over the lip of the bluey condo. We found him on top of the condo and he was not pleased with being put back in his tank.

Blueys.

Oh, yeah....that stinks!

Here's a pic of both of them when they were babies....it's on one of the quiz pages. They don't look as pretty as when they went into adulthood. Can you tell who's who? ;)

Astro did it again yesterday! We came home and I walk into my brother's room to put his laundry up and low and behold, Astro's head is sticking out of the blinds and his tongue is flicking out at me. It was during a thunderstorm so maybe he was scared.
My brother and my Dad managed to get him out and I fixed the small hole in the mesh on his lid that must have been what he slipped out through. What a glorious invention duct tape is!
