a very old bluetongue

Postby ROBSTA » Tue Feb 05, 2008 2:37 am

this is my bluey i rescued when i was a kid i was about 11 years old at time,

after a big storm on the edge of a lake at narrebeen in sydneys northen beaches.

At first i thought it was dead lying in a pile of rubbish washed up on the shore
but i touched it and it hissed!
It was weak and covered in ticks so i took it home and cared for it.

That lizard is still with me, im now nearly 34,and still going strong so i took some pics with my camera phone to show you.
It was an adult when i found it so i can only really guess what age it really is
it had the end of its tail bitten by a cage mate long ago and never fully healed

Wow, that makes him at least 23 years old -- that proves these animals can indeed live well into there 30's...

that's one very lucky bluey.

great job caring for him when you were eleven.

Did you ever consider returning him to the wild?

yeah it was an adult when i got it so it must of been at least a few years old then so add about 23 years and it may be 30.

my other bluey who passed away after 24 years in captivity it was full grown at capture

well after keeping him for awhile when your a kid you become attached
also it had been washed away from whereever it had lived and ended up on floating rubbish in narrebeen lakes so,we never return an animal where not sure of the exact location as of risk of interfering with the local genepool

also it was long before licencsing was around and the only way to aquire
lizards was to catch them!

*sigh*

Over the years there have always been questions about whether or not typical BTS could live to be 30. Some suggested they often didn't even get to 20. We usually can never tell a BTS' exact age unless someone has actually HAD the animal the entire time. Hearing about blueys time after time that are at least 25, and seeing this guy here proves to me that they can easily squeak into the 30's. I've always assumed, but it feels good knowing that this guy has HAD him this whole time as well as finding him as an adult.

Yeah, yeah, not scientific, I know... :knewthat:

I'm sure they can live into the thirties, this example suggests that, it just doesn't PROVE it. Haha I'm a stickler for semantics.

'Cause we didn't already know that. :D

I'm the same way though that was my first thought when Zach said "proves".

I agree.

That's why "I THINK..." blueys are very capable of living into their 30's, and are good to at least 20. This is just from what research I've read (like in the bluey bible), here and other accounts. You'd be shocked who has a bluey just "hanging around..."
