Sleeping

Postby PsyKoViggy » Sat Feb 09, 2008 2:39 am

Since i took out the paper towels and the cardboard box and gave Till aspen, a log hide, a peice of bogwood and a basking rock.. he has done very little but sleep.
Yesterday he didn't wake up at all, and the day before he was only awake for a very short period and ate very little food. He has slept loads every day since the substrate change, and a couple of days i'm not sure he would have woken up either if i hadn't dug him up to make sure he was still there.

Should i be worried about this?
I know he'll be alright without food for a while, but this just seems like a very big change from how he was before the substrate change, which happened a week ago now.

I dug him up because even my mum was worried about him, and he had a huffing fit, so i'm going to asume hes getting ready to shed again soon.

ha ha, is it just me who is constantly worried about everything their skink does?

What kind of substrate did he have before again?

Sounds like he's likely burrowing in the new aspen and brumating.

What kind of temperatures do you have outside? Inside? What are his temps on the hot side?

If you had nothing but paper towels, then switch to aspen, that all of a sudden gives him a brand new world of burrowing and burying. Doesn't surprise me at all that he's digging & hiding! It's a new thing to do! ;)

Sounds normal to me. Now that he has aspen to hide in he can probably relax enough to sleep in long stretches. You are in a cooler part of the world ... he sounds just fine. If your mom is worried have her read the sticky on brunation 101 and the care sheet if she hasn't already. It might make her feel better. :D

his basking area is just under 100.

well, my darling huffalump desided he would get up for a bit and had quite a lot of food which is good.
he still looked rather grumpy though, heheh.

and thank you Tattoo, but my mum definatly doesn't care that much, ha ha. She cried the last him she saw him out of his home.

thats debatable actually.. because they do have an earbone and some research has proved then can hear airborn sounds.. and there are people who have claimed their snake responds to its name...
she definatly reacted like she could hear at the time anyway..

but thats not a discussion for here :uhhhh:
heheh

If the tempuratures dropped even a little, and maybe the humidity changed with the new substrate, they'll notice, and assume it's winter. Some can be tricked, some can't. I found my guys hid for most of the day when awake, it's how they work. They'll be awake for maybe 4 hours, then hide the rest of the time. Could also be shed or just something random to do.

My snake doesn't seem to hear a thing. Would be helpful if she'd come when called. Maybe she wouldn't still be missing.

We've been getting sub zero night temps lately, and I'm sure my Blue knew they were coming, he dug in a little deeper just in case. Although spring has started to emerge,I think we still have some cold weather to get over, if he's hidden and hisses at you, leave him BRUMATING.
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

Small update.
He shed yesterday and seems a lot more happier today, back to his old self.. poddling around the viv and sticking his face up against the glass to watch everything.

Also gave him a few snails the other day, he love them!

will take photos within the next few days seeing as hes all freshly shed.
