New BTS Owner

Postby HylaCinerea » Mon Feb 11, 2008 3:25 pm

I've been looking at blue tongue skinks for quite some time and knew that I wanted to own one. After doing my research, I finally took the dive and bought one today. The guy I bought it from says that it is an Eastern blue tongue skink. I couldn't get a great picture with the indoor lighting, but here he is:

I'm going to add some rocks for him to climb and bask on later today.

Congrats and welcome to the site. Your blue tongue is not an Eastern. It is definitely a T. gigas species. I am going to guess a T. gigas gigas, the Indonesian BTS.

Very pretty BTS none the less.

Thanks for the welcome and helping with the identification. I looked over the the site's info on Indonesian BTS and get the impression that they're difficult to captive breed. Are they a lot harder than the more common species? Even better yet, has anyone had experience with breeding Indonesian BTS?

:welcome: to the forum! Nice skink you got there ... I would guess Indo due to tail length. Have no Indo breeding experience but have heard their cooling period does not require the cold temps some others bts require as gigas live in a warmer climate. Don't know if that's valid info. Don't forget ... :ryo:

You very well could be right that it is a Merauke. I have a hard time telling the two apart sometimes. The banding and coloration (even though their are some sexy yellow Meraukes out there) it makes me think Indo.

I dont have any breeding experience, but I think one reason that you dont find that many CB Indos is simply it is easier and cheaper for people to import them from Indonesia. I do plan to start breeding Indos. I currently have a yellow indo and will be getting a silver to mate it with. Hopefully I can bring out the nice silver coloring in more babies.

That would be an indo judging by the color and solid black legs. Can you get a birds-eye shot. Very nice skink. Congrats.

Nice Indo bts!
But next time remember not to give 100% trust to the pet shop about what they said on the identity of the lizard, becoz people can telling lies.
Actually Eastern bts is more expensive then Indo bts(I mean in Hong Kong's pet market).
Btw,it looks very healthy and cutie.
Thx for sharing.^_^
