We have wanted to get a bigger house for Peyton (save the 40 gallon for the pending new skinker) but finances are tight. Went on craiglist and looked like I often do - found a few 55 gal. emailed one guy - paydirt! It was worth the hour drive - 55 gal. with screen top, 3 lights, a stand, 2 hides, 3 nice pieces of driftwood and some plants for 100.00!! It housed an iguana - its in great shape. My question is what is the best and safest way to clean everything?? It should be ok as long as everything is clean, correct? I am so happy - she will be amazed when we get it all together, can't wait to create her new palace!!!

The only issue could be whether it previously had mites, ie. as the reason it was abandoned ?

No, the animal was healthy - oddly it became aggressive to the females in the family, wierd, huh?? Also it became so big (as Iguana's do) - it started to need its own room - or zip code, LOL!

How fun! It's a great feeling finding fun stuff and getting a good deal on it too -- you can certainly clean it. You can use bleach or alcohol...just make sure it's completely rinsed and cleaned out and that the smell is completely gone before putting the animal in. Air out after the clean as well.
Others use Nolvosan, it's a safer alternative to bleach -- not sure where you can find it though...the links I had for them are dead now..

This isn't weird at all. Iguanas have been known to randomly start attacking family members who've they've lived with their entire lives. I never recommend iguanas as a pet. They should only ever be kept by an experienced keeper who can handle their size and strength. IMO they are NOT good pets. That iguana is showing aggression that will get worse as it keeps growing. I hope they know what they're dealing with and will stay safe.

I was told by a vet when I had my Iguana(she was female) that males can pick up on the pheramones that women produce, more so , at that time of the month....
Back to the cleaning, I just use as hot a water as you can stand and anti-bacterial washing up liquid, rinse ,dry and leave to air well after, this should do you proud.
