Excavator burrowing material?

Postby Kymbadina » Sat Feb 16, 2008 3:17 pm

Anyone used this before? I thought it would be neat but I don't know because..well its clay and sand..but its said to harden and not be like regular sand substrate.

I read the info on the back of the bag(we have it at petsmart) and it says, your supposed to pack it in ther kinda wet and then let them burrow...i dont want to pick sand out of chompers nose though, you can also make your own burrow and then introduce them. I don't know how you would clean it though. It said don't get it wet..so hopefully Chomper wont pee in there.. It says once it stinks(guess thats how they say pooed in) you just take it out and start over with a new one. Chomper doesnt poo in his little house I made him..maybe he wont poo in this one? lol I can only hope!
I'm thinking of giving it a try.

I think Zach's roomy uses that. Shoot him a PM and ask about it. Apparently it's great for keeping the nails worn down.

yep...that is correct on both accounts. I believe his roommate also uses a secondary substrate in part of the tank as well though to allow the bluey to burrow at his own desire.

It keeps the nails SHAVED DOWN big time. He virtually doesn't even have them.

To make tunnels like that, you'd probably need like 3 or 4 bags...as one bag only barely covered the floor of a 2 x 2 feet tank....and that's not even considering the big basking rock has none underneath it. He did fuse a half log into it though, and it's pretty cool. Piling up some substrate in a corner or two gives him some burrowing.

I personally am not going to use it just because eventually, you'll have to take it all out and it's as hard as a rock -- I wonder how you get it out without possibly damaging the glass....

Oh, Okay thanks!
I think I will make a little slab or something that he can crawl around on but not set it in the tank wet..that way I can remove it easily.
Thanks for all the help!

Zach, to remove it you just need to get it wet again. It goes back to being pliable. I use it for my leopard gecko.

Why not make/form the tunnel/structure out of the tank, let it dry on clingfilm or something ,when dry, peel it off, then place it into the set up .Can the stuff be sealed ,to make it permanent?
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

That's a really good idea, I'll have to try it out
