http://www.reptilebreedersexpo.com/

This is, supposedly, the biggest show in the world...though, from what I have seen, the one in Hamm, Germany is bigger...at any rate, it is the biggest in the states and the most likely to have Shingles there. I am pretty sure I am going to plan to go if life permits!

I got mine off of ads on kingsnake.com, but "BUYER BEWARE"... You want to make sure it is legally captive bred and imported, and not something smuggled in from Australia. So ask lots of questions, and expect them to be answered (and walk away from the deal if they aren't).

And expect to pay at least $3000 for one. We've seen ads for a female aspera for $6500 that apparently sold.

They are far more common in the UK and Europe then here in the states...

The Hamm Show in Germany is probably one of the best places to go...other then that I have seen them "all over" the classifieds over there (compared to here, anyway). :)

I understand why you'd love one - and i have no doubt whatsoever that you'd take one if given the opportunity (and I'm not judging you for your comment, i'm just putting forward my views on the smuggling issue) - but i find it disturbing that with how much everyone on this site goes on about wild caught Blueys and how wrong it is, that you and others would and in one case have taken in illegally imported Animals.

Doing so supports the illegal wildlife trade and therefore makes anyone guilty of this a hypocrite. I have a Very low opinion of people that do this, and it's downright criminal.

Anyone that owns illegally imported animals should be jailed.

Blotch- I completely agree! Also, what are your views on people having licenses to capture and keep wild blueys in Australia, even now that there is a decent stock in the pet trade already?

I know 3 or 4 people in the UK with shinglebacks :) They are around, but more available in Europe. Was that Reptile Zone that you spoke to by any chance?

Yeah, they used to be very cheap...just a couple of years ago a shop in Croydon sold a pair for £450 as part of their half-price closing sale apparently. Crazy - people would happily pay the full price these days :) I imagine £1000 isnt too bad a price for a baby right now, especially for a shop price; however, demand for them in the UK isnt especially high. They are far more popular on the continent. Its the same for a lot of the higher-end reptiles; the UK seems to consist primarily of "pet" reptile owners, lol ;)

I dont know of any babies right now, but its the wrong time of year. I have heard of one guy that apparently has babies from time to time, but have also heard that he doesnt sell them; no idea where you might contact him though, just something I heard circulating on another forum!

well, I do think it is slightly different over here rach, and i'm sure lots of people will agree and most likely cuz we're all guilty of taking a bluey from the wild at one point or another. However If the numbers were dangerously low and heading towards endangered - I'd say that it's wrong for the exact reasons you say.

But in saying that, Blueys are so common in the pet trade that if we ever did get to the point where blueys were endangered - we could repopulate areas if need be.

Personally I have a couple of wild ones which were given to me by people that had no idea how to keep them. I can't just go return them to the wild cuz I'm not sure where they came from - so I kept them and I'm looking after them.

So in answer to your question - The wild capture licences are ok I guess, as long as it's not overdone. Illegal export is a different bag of fish altogether.

IMO illegal export is horrible because of how the animals are smuggled. They can't be put into safe little boxes, they have to be knocked out, and put somewhere the officials wouldn't suspect, said place almost guaranteed to be bad for the animal. For every few that make it, many more die. I do not want to support anyone who would do this to an animal.

yeah it is called a rescue - but at the end of the day it's still keeping a wild animal when it should really be returned to the wild. Luckily for Me - I get to keep them cuz I am unsure where they are all from.
