Mmkay.
I'm picking up my very first skink tomorrow, so I'm basically excited.
I was just wondering about the cage.
My friend gave it to me, and it's actually really big..
Well, it's really tall.
And I don't like it that much, since I'm worried the height might mess up the heat or something.
So;; I was thinking and maybe I could put the cage on it's side?
And put the opening up to a wall or something so he couldn't get out.
'Cause if it was on it's side, he'd have a lot more room to move around.
I just have to figure out how I'd get the heat lamp to work properly.
Would it work if I just shone it on the glass?
Is this a good idea, or should I just leave the cage upright?
Cage question.

I had my AWOL gecko's cage on its side with the heat lamp on it, and it cracked the glass. Scared teh crapola outta me, I heard it crack and didnt' know what it was at first!
So I would definetly NOT recommend putting it directly on glass, unless you want a heart attack!

We need more info(dimensions) and a picture to answer you're question properly. If you have the room, silicone a fixing to the inside of the tank and hang it from that, you'll need the UVB tube (or what ever you'll use)to be inside the tank, as the glass will filter out any usefull UV rays, can you slice the side, and remove (what would be the top) and use this as the door/new side? It's pointless having the basking light working how you've got it, the skink should receive the heat not the glass.
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

Instead of worrying about a heat lamp cracking the glass, why not use an under tank heating pad?

Dunno what everyone else thinks of this, But Chomper is currently sitting in a 176 quart rubbermaid container. I dont have a lid I just use the clamp lights. He's only in there untill we build his tank. He's about 15 inches and a 20 gall just wasnt cutting it. You could maybe get one untill you find a better tank? It was only 16 at target. I'll Get some pictures and set them up later tonight

Undertank heating pads can run amuck and cause problems as your bluey is siting on top of them. Better to have a heat source that your pet can not touch so there is no issues with burning your pet. Plus blueys digest their food sunning their backs ... not their tummys.

I am currently keeping chopper in one of those tubs with a clamp light on it.

A heating pad but no light?
I'm a strong advocate for heat lights and no heat pads/ceramic heat emitters. I always use the example of heat difference as sitting in a sauna compared to sun bathing. The light lamp is supposed to simulate the sun's rays on the lizards back....heat pads won't do that.

The glass would get really hot, and you do run the rick of cracking it. That's just not safe in any respect , and in all reality, it doesn't sound like a good cage for a bluey. What are the dimensions of the bottom?
