Need help with ID please (urgent and DUW)

Postby Beyonder » Tue Feb 19, 2008 9:34 am

Hi,

Visited the shop which had these imported blue tongues in stock yesterday. Ive used the excellent descriptions provided at this awesome site, however I feel I have to ask the experts for help. From the pictures I think they look like Meraukes. Can someone help me out? If it is a Merauke, do you guys recommend this subspecies?

The bluey looks like an IJ to me. Great species to keep as pets!

The BTS in the first picture looks more Merauke, the second looks IJ. Throughout all the other pictures, I'm seeing most of the BTS as IJ. Only that first one looks Merauke to me.

Almost definitely Irian Jaya. The solid banding gives that up. :)

They indeed look Merauke to me. Speckled legs, long tails, they really look like a herd of my Chuffers!
I'm crap at Id'ing anything other than Shinglebacks and Meraukes though, because I have a Merauke, and I really really want a Shingleback.

I highly recommend Meraukes just in personality by the way! sI love my guy, his personality is mellow, he's friendly, and he's active. The only problems with them are, I believe most of them are wild caught, so a good herp vet check up will absolutely be in order to get rid of any parasites they might have. Also, being wild caught, it may take a little time and patience to tame them down at first. But in my experience, mine tamed down beautifully.

Ultimately, the choice is yours but try and find out as much about them as you can, like where the store got them, how old they are, how much they're asking for them, etc. If they can't answer your questions in a way you are comfortable with, you might be better off going elsewhere.
Good luck whatever you decide, they are beautiful animals regardless.

I'm gonna say Merauke but they are odd looking. Look at the length of the tails! Are they all from the same litter? The color of the first one is really interesting.

Hi,

They are very expensive. I paid 80 Euros for Odin.
These are 140 Euros.

The pictures here dont do the animals justice really. They were all very strong colored with yellow banding. I was told they are captive bred in the US. I did not get any info about them all being from the same litter.

Thanks for your answers guys.

I dont know if I will buy one of these. Several of them had "issues" with one of them looking sick and hiding in the corner. He looked very frightened. The eyes of these lizards really can really display emotions.
I noticed one of them had a small lump on his throat and another had some disfigured scales on the upper right jaw. I think I saw 1 or 2 more or less "healthy" animals out of the bunch.

They did not have anymore of Odins relatives in the store. All the older ones were gone (they used to have them in this huge enclosure). So obviously they do not breed them anymore.

I`ll go back there tomorrow or Thursday to take more pics and decide on what to do.

Again, thanks for helping me out :)

Here is the pic of the little one who looked sick (sorry for the lack of focus):

He stayed there for the entire 10 minutes I surveyed them while the others ran around like crazy.

probably the runt. He probably is right down low in the pecking order - and blueys have a pecking order when housed together.

It's sad them all being kept together. I'd bet anything this one was being picked on and bitten anytime he walked around near the others. I've seen this exact thing when the babies start getting bigger...

By the way, all IJ except the last one is Merauke.

And yeah, technically, IJ and Merauke are one in the same. Still having a hard time swallowing that. I keep thinking of Slurpy...and then Chuffers for example, Just completely different. But then you see the "fused" animals that are half and half because they're from the same region.

I agree that they looked IJ with a very scared IJ/Merauke in the corner, this does show the reason why they should be housed seperately.

Buy the way, you talk about Euros, I thought Europe didnt need to import from America, I reckon they're telling porkies and they're wild caught.

Hi guys,

Many many replies here :) Thanks for ID.

I have tried to suggest to the pet store people that housing them together isnt such a good idea. Like talking to a wall.

Germany often imports reptiles from the US. I see ads all the time claiming US bred animals, so I believe they tell the truth.

Sad to say this, but I dont think one of these guys will come home with me. I`ll think it over until tomorrow.
