Victorian Herp Expo was extremely over-rated - However...

Allow me to introduce the newest member of my family.

Names: Apophis or Franklin (from Arrested development - It aint easy being white)

My Baby Kimberly Northern. And it's 100% prince regent!

Image

i took a few other pics, here they are.

Snake ranch Albinos (IMO - really over-rated - they look better in the pics)

Image
Image
Image

This Scrub Python is 17 feet long and as wide as a full grown adults neck.

Image

This guy wasn't for sale - but I figured he needed to have his pic taken so yall could drool over another poo.

Image

This is the eastern at the bottom of the previous pic.
Once again - not for sale - but there was a guy there selling juvi easterns.

Image

Here's the Kimberlies before I made my mind up to buy one.

Image

The closest one is the one i got.

Image

Anyway - i'll take more pics of my newwie once i feed it - they'll hopefully be better pics than the one I took! Oh - it;s already displaying the speckles and it's around 1 - 2months old.

Congratulations! Just had to get something us non-Aussies could never get now didn't you! ;) Hope to see more and more pictures! Thanks for sharing those that you were able to take at the show as well...

That is a really cool Shingle and I still think the Albinos are pretty cool! I would never pay for albinos, but I DO appreciate them. :D

Congrats on the Northern, I reckon its gunna be a biggun when it gets older.

The day was a much bigger deal than I expected and most of the people there looked realitively normal. :-) I say most and relatively.

I came within a few seconds of buying another Alpine Blotchie but common sense prevailed -darn that common sense thing  . I could hear my wifes voice from my shoulder saying NO NO from 200km away as I was opening my wallet.

Great buy, looking forward to hearing how it develops Luke. I saw the rest of the babies there- beautiful animals.

Thx guys!

Jas - yeah mate - had to get something you guys can't! thought it only fitting! :P I too appreciate them - but would never pay $2500 for albino or $3000 for Hypomelanistic. The snake ranch peeps were selling normal looking easterns that carry the albino gene for $750!!! I repeat - they looked normal!!! Nothing special whatsoever!

Scott: I too almost got one of those Alpines - but I figured - i'm not sure if it's gonna be a female - and it's not a lowland - so I would rather a kimbo. Funny how the kimbo was cheaper than the Alpines huh? only $10 cheaper but still - surprised me!

There were more "normal" looking people than I expected too! I had some chick say to her fella when i walked past "Oh My! look at how long that guys hair is!" I had to laugh.

The Kimbo is already speckling up on its head - I noticed a cpl of rough spots on him when we got home - but seeing as he's so young - they'll no doubt heal properly.

ALSO!!!! I was talking to the guy for a while - and he was saying he is thinking about selling off a pair of kimbos. They are the parents of the one I purchased - so i told him I was interested. He said $250 each - I said sounds good, I grabbed his number and will be keeping in contact.

Funny thing is - he knows Perenty (les). He didn't have many nice things to say - however he didn't exactly crap on him. Not impressed with les breeding the Princes with Darwins though.

Anyway - I've spoken to the Mrs - and as soon as they become available - we're gonna snap them up and breed them. I'll keep you in mind if (when) it all happens!

Well - I'm not sure now! Sometime in the future - but probably not the near future. I have 11 blueys now!

He cost $140 Australian which is maybe $125US at the moment, Maybe $130US. I'll take a heap of pics VERY soon, and they'll include the enclosure - however it's nothing special, just a big plastic tub with a light, water, a tissue bos for a hid and a broken roof tile and soap stone so it can use to shed.

Honestly - with the exception on the 4 other easterns from Snake Ranch and the tub of Juvi easterns that some young guy was selling - that's all the skinks that were there. I was really bummed out cuz in melbourne, Lowland Blotchies are a dime a dozen - but there were NONE! I think the organizers could've done more to bring more businesses or private breeders on board.

Shingle - If I get his Pair - which I will when they come up for sale, I'll breed them - And once that happens, I'll hook you up!

BlueyBabe - It's pretty calm - it runs under cover at times but generally it just sits there looking at me. I think it's hissed once - not quite sure - cuz if it was a hiss - it was a weak effort. BTW - good to hear that you could be getting another bluey! If you wanna see what you can get, take a look at mom22wins personal gallery. I'm sure there are plenty of others on here that have Zachs kids, just ask and i'm sure they'll show you pics.
That way you can choose by the offspring that has already been sold.
It'll give you a better idea of what's to come from which pair.

Juvie albinos sold for $1800 last season and the melanistics were $2400. Snake Ranch offered a 20% discount for those who pre-ordered so they were in fact available for $1440 and $1920 respectively.

'Nothing special whatsoever' about a het for albino bluey? Are you familiar with Mendelian genetics at all?

The asking price for these morphs are very reasonable IMO, and the fact they were all sold well before they were born proves this. There is an incredibly massive market for albino and melanistic blueys, thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of people, in Australia would like to own one. It will be a long time before there are enough to supply everyone and until such time the prices will remain high, and rightly so; it is called supply and demand.

Yep means you need two Hets to get a 25% chance of any individual offspring being Albino.

Het with normal = no chance of Albino cos the abinism gene is recessive.

Crossing two hets the possibilities are:

AA Aa aA aa - only the two (aa) recessive alleles together will be Albino.

Assuming its not sex linked that is and there are not other genes at play with pigmentation :-) which I assume it is not which is a whole diff story.

Indeed, although if you crossed a het with a normal half the offspring would also be hets. If you kept all of the offspring together as a colony you would no doubt end up with quite a few albinos eventually, especially if the original het is kept with them. It would be preferable however to put the original het over the offspring (of opposite sex) individually and keep a record of the results to filter out the non-hets.

Purchasing one het alone is certainly not ideal but would eventually pay off if you had the patience. Of course the real value of hets is realised when they are bred with homozygous animals which would result in 50% homo and 50% het litters.
