Introducing...

Postby Lizardqueen&Chuckie » Sun Feb 24, 2008 1:01 am

Hi all!

I've been onto this website countless times for the caresheet while waiting for my Bts, and i've finally decided to make an account.

I got my first Bts Chuckie yesturday :D . He's 18 years old, got him from a friend of a friend who was giving (him?, i think) away. I'm not sure exactly of his breed, I'm pretty sure just common Blue tongue. He's pretty untame at the moment. Hisses and walks away when i pet him or put my hand too close.
He's also mising a few toenails, and lost his tail, which i can see is starting to regrow. Favourite spot is under a plastic log at the moment, and he loves cockroaches and grapes. I havent measured him yet, he's still settling in and all.

This site is great, i couldn't find any proper information anywhere else. It was a lifesaver when i first brought him home.

eep, just found a tick between two of his frount toes. We dont have any metholated spirits around, will frontline be ok?
and as it says in the caresheet, once the tick drops off, is it dead, or just dropped off because of the frontline, will it reattatch if i cant find it in his enclosure?

Ill take some pics tomorow, when he's de-ticked :)

nope - but betadine is the better option.

just make sur eyou get the entire tick, and put betadine on a cotton bud and wipe over the are and all will be good! Seeing as you've found one tick - make sure you put it under heat. Ticks make themselves seen when the Blueys are in warm areas. I hope you're lucky enough to not have a tick or 2 in either or both ears.

The tick was light brown, and it was still alive when i picked it out, when i was about to put it on an open flame it was wriggling around on the bottom of a jar that i had it in, so im assuming that i got the head out. can they live without their head? like cockroaches.

it came out really easy, it was hardly much of a tug and it was free. ill have another look at his toe later on, when he wakes up.

from my experience (I've had a tick or 2 on me in my time) they are harder to get off Humans and dogs than they are with reptiles. I'm sure you got the whole thing.

I've taken several off myself, my sisters, my dog, and the occasional neighbors pet. I use the hot pin method, and it seems to work very well. I don't know which methods do this, but some will cause the tick to spit out more saliva, as a defense, which could carry illnesses. Vaseline on the back of the tick makes it so it can't breath and has to pull out. This could possibly be the safest way to remove a tick.

Its not just the head, but the jaws that can stay embedded and go septic, thats why the pulling off can leave these behind, at least it wasnt white(pm DeadEye about them) they're called the paralisis tick and can kill!!!

What a beaut!

I'm not convinced there's one right or wrong way to remove a tick -- I've heard so many methods! And all have been frowned on by someone.

Thanks very much for your help everyone. The tick was in a pretty picky spot between his toes, so i didnt really want to use the hot pin method incase i got his toe accidently.

He's doing great. eating well, still not very happy with being handled though, struggles and hisses.
