I had a thought today for a bluey treat...

Postby Lucifer_Spades » Wed Feb 27, 2008 3:25 am

My mom used to breed Zebra Finches and though she got bored with them and quit I adored them and have always wanted to keep a pair.

The problem with them is that they lay many, many eggs which can mean many many babies. The eggs are small though and would be perfect bite size morsels for skinkers and would be high in calcium and protein, and would probably be a lot less messy than a whole chicken egg since even a youngling skink could fit the whole egg in it's mouth...

Now I may have to get that pair of birds...

Yeah because I need more pets.

Hey Shingle there will be folks reading this saying "what the heck is a budgie"? :-)

I found a clutch of Gecko eggs the other day - was tempted by the dark side but decided to let the be in the garden though I'm betting my baby blotchies would have been licking their lips :-). I hatched out one of the baby geckos this arvo.

We used to own Pink roller canaries that spent two years trying to produce, every single egg was a duff, so we assumed that they were both female, could you do this with the budgies, and you cant get any fresher than straight outta the back door..

Female doves will lay eggs regardless of if they're fertilized. They'll actually lay more unfertilized than fertile. Maybe go for some doves?

Yes Blotch, that is a budgie.

I could probably feed mine an actual Zebra finch, I'd have to pull a freshy out of my radiator first.

Apparently parakeet is just a broad term used to describe small parrots.
http://au.encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_ ... akeet.html

I reckon mine would eat a small bird, they try and catch butterflies when they swoop low down near them and some of the butterflies we get round here are bigger than some of the little chirpy birds.

This stupid little thing keeps throwing itself at the bathroom window and if it manages to find its way in it'll be the last thing it does.
