Yesterday when I went to go get this skink I had been told it was bought at Petco and had been bought with mouthrot, that the mouth rot was being treated and was getting better.
I assumed from this that this person had been in possession of the skink for no more than a few months and that the mouthrot was well on it's way to mending. I think this was a good assessment based on the information I had...
Here is what I found when I saw the animal (soft stomachs and hearts may wish to look away)
It turned out this person had had the animal for 2 YEARS with mouthrot the whole time!
It seems it was fed mostly babyfood and table scraps. It is missing several toes and all it's claws are damaged because of the piles of stuck shed on them. I almost turned around back to my car but couldn't stand the thought of this poor animal going to someone who may be just as ignorant of their care.
To top this all off, I was told I was getting a 60 gallon breeder tank fully outfitted. It is a 40 gallon lined with dirty carpet, a log, some feeding saucers, lights and several jars of baby food, and some extra indoor out door carpet.
And the real kicker? This person is a vet tech!
On a slightly cuter note, it's horrible and I had the flash on but I got a tongue shot already! It does have a very sweet temperment though a bit skittish, I think with some TLC she will be a lovely, sweet skink.

ahh that is sad the poor thing. and a vet tech as well thats disgusting. i dont know what a vet tech is over there but i would be extremely disapointed if a vet tech like myself over here graduated with such a lack of basic husbandry and care or even jsut a lack of caring for an animal in general. you did the right thing by getting him, he mgiht look a little roughed up now but give him some time and treatment and he'll be back to the gorgeous blue tongue he is. good luck with him i dotn think there is anyone here who would ahve walked away without him.
cheers
H.

you should have contacted the police that is animal cruelty. they take people to jail for dogs and cats we need to be harsher on people who choose to run businesses that way.

Gah, that poor animal has been suffering like that for over 2 years! I'll save my more creative comments for later via MSN. For now I'll just say I'm glad you've got him. Looks like he has the potential to me an amazing skink. I hope that eye is fixable. It also looks to me like there is a lot of retained shed damage. Good luck Luce. Sending my well-wishes your way.

PLEASE tell me you did not give that horrid cruel person any money whatsoever!
I would still call the humane society or ASPCA on animal cruelty and let them know how you received that poor animal the very least they could do is help you pay for the vet bills that it'll need to get healthy!
I would also find out the school they went to for vet tech, and where they work! Holy crap, to be a vet tech and let your animal suffer like that is completely disgusting.
It's a jolly good thing I live all the way in WA state or I'd be banging down some doors ready to unleash some Saille-Fury on them!
Grrrr. . . Humans. . . .

What a beautiful skink, and to be treated like that!
Thats totally ridiculous!!
Just a question when a skink does have mouthrot, does that mean it cant open it because of the side damage ?
