fresh water snales

Postby godzilla » Mon Mar 24, 2008 11:52 pm

Hi guys sorry long time no post I know and I am sorry. Godzilla is doing great, getting really fat and practicing his hissing technique on me. I know it's not supposed to be funny but mwahahaha cracks me up every time.

Anyway the reason for my post is that, well as you know Australia has been kinda dry lately and as a result there are not alot of snales to be had in the gardens, I catch a stack of grasshoppers for 'zilla but feel like he is missing out on the snales. Is it ok to buy some fresh water snales from the pet store and breed them for him? Thanks in advance.

mystery snails and apple snails are commonly fed to blueys by people on here. Personally - I rounded up a few snails, and followed Lisas guide to breeding snails and am yet to find babies - but I'm still optimistic!

I have been unable to even find one and that's having my kids and all the kids in their classes on the job. I will have a look at the aquarium for the ones you listed. Thanks Blotch.

Fresh water snails make good foods. When you get them, keep them isolated for a bit before feeding. A month will get rid of anything harmful, which works well if you're going to be breeding them.

I'm currently breeding small ramshorn snails. They're actually considered a pest snail, so I got all mine dirt cheap. Many pet stores will just give them away. I like these because they're small enough for even tiny babies to eat, the skinks eat the whole snail without leaving all the shell, and they breed like crazy. I currently have 50+ egg sacs waiting to hatch @.@ I'm going to be overrun if they're all fertile ^.^ I plan to get a big enough bunch of these guys that I can feed a spoonful every day or so to my skinkers.

The other type of snail is the Apple/Golden snail. These get much bigger, and I find my skinks will crunch it, eat the inside, then leave all the shell. These are still good feeders though, and I plan to have a colony in the future.

Both can be kept in a basic tank with fresh water, and will eat algae, veggies, and well pretty much anything. Ramshorns will lay eggs on any surface at all, not sure about Apples/Goldens though. They all poop a lot, so I stir up the water daily, and change out some of it. I also have a betta (siamese fighting fish) living with mine, to pretty up the tank. Make sure that if you have anything else in the tank, it won't eat the snails, baby snails, or eggs, as most fish will.

yeh mate, you should get the small pest ones free,if they wont give any at the shop just buy a plant from a tank there, and it will more likely than not be riddled with 'em.

Red ramshorns aren't given away over here.

They are sold. Well atleast in every petstore I've been into it's been that way.

I got my red ramshorns from someone who's tank was overrun. Find some local fish people and ask them.

Red rams are a recessive trait of regular rams. Therefor if you breed them together, you'll lose the reds. I don't really care as it's just for feeding purposes, so my reds are with my regulars.
