I'm getting another bluey today!

Its the one from the pet store that has been declawed. I just can't stand seeing her there anymore. Are there any special concerns I need to address with a declawed bluey? I've never even heard of that being done before.

What do you mean declawed? Are you sure its not from stuck shed?

why is everything stuck shed these days.....

Because stuck shed is a much much more logical explanation than a "declawed" bluey. Honestly, BTS nails arent even that bad. It would not make sense to declaw a bluey. If we were talking about a monitor or an iguana that have horribly sharp and damaging claws, then I would possibly see it being declawed by some idiot.

I guess I am more realistic and think logically.

yes but that is where you are wrong there is no logic to inhumane acts like declawing. and there is definitely no room for logic when dealing with stupid people. de-barking a dog isnt logical either yet people do it.

There is no history on this animal. The OP is ASSUMING that it was declawed. She posted in this thread that she has never seen this before. So that shows she is inexperienced with BTS (nothing against you at all Buff!!!). Missing toes in BTS is almost always linked to improper shedding.

Helikaon-why do you think that it was declawed by a person and not be from the more realistic option of a stuck shed?

Also, if this bluey was truly declawed by a previous owner, why would they only do the front feet? Why not do all of them?

heheh it seems you have more information then me. i have not read any other threads on this animal just this one

"its the one from the pet store that has been declawed. I just can't stand seeing her there anymore. Are there any special concerns I need to address with a declawed bluey? I've never even heard of that being done before."

so that is all the info i have. from this there is no mention of it being only the front feet. secondly from this she mentions de-clawing and says she has never heard of this being done before....so this implies to me that the owner has told her it has been declawed as if she has never heard of it being done that would not be her first logical thought. for example if i saw a bluey with missing toe nails , i would like you initially think trauma of some kind, possibly shedding problems like you suggested the thought of declawing would never enter my mind unless the owner told me it has been declawed. i most certainly wouldn't be asking for advice about a declawed animal unless i knew it in fact had been declawed.

that is my reasoning behind my statements, oh and debarking is a very not nice operation think of it like your voice box being taken out.

Well, I try to go back through the posters threads to see what they are talking about. I like to get as much info as possible before I make an opinion. I try not to jump to conclusions based on the limited info that is presented to me.

Here is from one of Buff's other threads:

There is a huge bluey at a pet store here in Virginia that is $300.00. But he has no front claws...it looks like someone declawed him by removing part of his toes. So sad.

well there ya go. i dont jump to conclusion's either, and i usually don't bother listening to the owners either as most lie or are repeating someone else words. why i initially hinted towards stuck shed being thrown around a littel to casually as people are jumping to the conclusion that the problem is stuck shed rather then the symptom of the problem is stuck shed. and i am seeing this in some of the rescue skink threads. in some cases yes the shed in the problem others the shed is a symptom. but in this thread it simply came to the fact that mentioning stuck shed didnt' really have any relevance as she was merely asking whether or not there was any info she should know about keeping an animal without claws, which i will answer now. no not really any problem at all it will be fine, might have a bit of an issues walking on smooth surfaces but thats about it.

IMO, none of this has any relevance to this thread. Even if stuck shed was a symptom, the direct cause of the missing toes would be stuck shed.

Congrats Buff on the new skink. Good luck and glad that he finally has a good home.

P.S. you need to post some more pictures of all your animals (in the Off Topic thread of course other wise you will have the forum police after you ;) )

stuck shed can be a symptom and not cause toes to fall off, thats where you are jumping to conclusions plenty of things can make toes fall off other then shed. stuck shed may actually be a symptom of the toes falling off. but i will leave it at that. its to late and i am to tired at this time in the morning after a long night at work. congratss on the new skinka!! all will be well and we would love pics of it when you get it, don't forget to let us know what you named it.

Buff, I'm sure the Bluey will be very happy to have a new loving home. It shouldn't have any trouble moving around at all, as it still has the back legs with claws to propel it. Even if all claws were missing, it would still be fine on most surfaces. Remember, pictures are the law.

Heikanon, how often do you ever see stuck shed in Aus? Even all of Deadeye's rescues seem to be fine when it comes to their shedding. Is it at all common in Aus?

nope it really isnt very common here i have never seen a wild bluey with shedding problems but i have seen a few captive ones.

Sorry to take so long to respond. Although I've had reptiles for years now, you are right that I'm inexperienced with blueys, but I've fallen head over heels in love with them. That's why I count on you fine folks to give me advice as well. There are no claws on this bluey at all. The toes look to be very cleanly removed, but it very well could be from stuck shed. I know nothing about her or her previous owner. That's all. Her name is Calypso.Image

Calypso is beautiful! Aside from the toes she looks to be in great health.

Did they at least give you a huge discount on her for being "damaged" and an adult?

Poor thing. I know you at least will do the research and take proper care of her from now on.
Grats on a new Bluey for your family!

Buffcajun - There is nothing special you need to do with a bluey that is lacking toes. I have a female Eastern missing toes and a foot - and she is outside doing great! Plus I have another 2 easterns, one of which has toes in terrible condition, but seems to be handling the situation fine - both of the new ones just need to eat and put on weight.

Stuck shed seems to be a bigger problem for American keepers, although I have seen a couple cases of it in Captives here in aus. I think it all just comes down to owners having no idea what to do. So here's some advice, if it looks like it's coming up to shed time (they get milky bellies and generally go darker in coulouring on the back), pay attention to when the skin breaks and bathe it every now and then. It's not always needed, but at the end of the day - it helps your bluey shed, and it also does no harm.

Thanks! Yes,they did give me a HUGE HUGE discount for her. I think it was to get me out of the store. She only had a little red light on her cage and she was so cold! Her bedding was "care fresh". I made a big scene in the store and I threatened to call animal control on them in front of all the other customers. ROFLMAO...
