Santana's Toe Problems

Postby pryme » Wed May 28, 2008 6:35 pm

Ok so while I was gone for 3 months in OZ and NZ, my parents took care of my skinks. I instructed them on what to do, gave them the care sheet, and referred them to this website if they had any problems. I thought they'd be relatively safe especially since my dad is a former zoo technician. They both looked relatively healthy but it seems Santana has developed some toe problems. Here are some pictures of what I'm talking about. My dad thinks that he either has injured them trying to climb up the tank or he's been biting them himself. He's shed twice since I was gone and each time they have given him baths to help with the shedding. I don't know what to think. I'm debating taking him to the vet but I'm not sure of what to do.

I see four toes, two on each back foot that look messed up. They're both in the middle of the feet. The one on the back right foot looks really bad, it looks dislocated or broken.

looks like a broken toe to me. The other foot looks ok - just a bit crusty from sheding. Maybe the pics aren't showing me what you want them to?

I'd take your little guy to the vet - he may be able to reset it - never know your luck - they are tiny bones - but it is possible. How many animals do you know that can break their backs and still move around? Not a lot hey? Blueys can!

Worst case scenario is that your bluey may lose the toe - in which case isn't such a bad thing - I have a bluey that's missing toes and another 2 that i got from an old member here that have toes so mangled it's painfull to look at them. They all get around fine though. Go get them checked to be safe!

Good luck!

EDIT - I just looked apics agaoin and realised the middle toe on the other foot is half gone. Seems that the shed may have gotten caught and your bluey may have been trying to bite the shed off and in doing so has taken the tip of the toe off instead. Take it to the vet as said earlier! better t be safe than sorry.

Are the toes purple/red and do they look swollen? Trikks had a toe look like that, bent, purple, swollen, it fell off. Then he had another, same but not bent, my vet gave me some meds, a cream, I don't have it nearby to look at the name. The toe is looking more normal now. Both were center toe, front feet. I'll find the meds in a bit.

I just tried them too ... must be down for a while. Wait a bit and try again.

I just remembered ... you are in Oz right? You could pm Lisa. I believe she has an Aussie vet list. Not sure who else does.

try www.arav.com as well.
Have you soaked and tried to get that stuck shed off the other toes? That broken one looks like it might fall off.

Banfield..It's the vet inside petsmart(they arnt owned by the same people and have no connections other than they take up residence in petsmarts. There are different kind of vets in different stores.. I don't know if the price changes but out here it's 45 for an office visit..I havn't been to any other herp vets, I stick with the same because he has been looking at Chomper since he was a baby. If there are no Banfield herp vets I know they can give you the number of the nearest one.

Any luck/updates with this skinker's toes? Did you ever find a good herp vet on those sites?
