BTS maybe?
My friends friend has a Blue tongue skinnk that he wants to rehome, so my friend called me, knowing I have many leopard geckos and bearded dragons. I am thinking about it.
Also, can you post some pics of enclosures and what not.
Also, would a 40 gallon breeder be sufficient? I read that theya re the bear minimum, but I have nothing else for now.
Thanks in advance,
Jasen

I was talking to my friend, and he was telling me about his friends BTS. I decided not to get it. He was keeping it in a really small tank, feeding it dog food. I just dont want to be spending tons of money on vet bills. But im still interested in BTS. ANy good breeder websites?

ummm i vote you save it IMMEDIETLY!! a small tank with just dog food..that's awefull. Where is this poor thing being kept? does he even have lights or anything for it?? poor baby. I dont know what you mean about expensive vet bills...any pet has the risk of running up a bill for the vet..It doesnt matter what it is, if it is sick you should take it to the vet...At the very least get the lizard from him and take it to a shelter or someone else who will take better care of it..

First off, while the small tank is not a good sign, many long time keepers have been feeding BTS just dog food for years. It may not be the recommended diet, but it is not a bad thing. The skink could still be in decent shape and make a great pet.
I would suggest possibly going to look at it, and seeing what it looks like physically. It will likely look fat, but see if it has it's toes/tail, what the eyes/nose/mouth look like (no mucus, clear, not breathing heavily/open mouth), and how it acts (alert and responsive when warm). Then run a paper towel over it to check for black specks (Mites!). If all of this is good, it is likely a decent skink. It could still use a checkup and dewormer, and as with any animal there is a risk of problems, but chances are good the animal is decent. Even if you only go look to tell the guy what he happens to be selling. Tell him to find a reptile rescue.
Now honestly, I think you are probably right not to grab the first skink you get offered. Baby season is upon us, and we have several great breeders on this site. Research first, and be ready for your new pet. Breeder skinks are IMO amazing! BTS.net breeders are wonderful
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hmmm...
Jasen, if you're kind of up on reptile keeping, perhaps you should see the skink rather than just sign it off completely. I mean, if it's in a bad situation and it hasn't gone downhill, it might be a good match. Though you're wise not to simply take on someone else's burden and essentially fix their problem with your time, money and experience. Oh and dog food isn't necessarily bad, it's better than plates full of iceberg lettuce and crickets, which I've seen at some pet stores.
I say check the skink out, its worth a shot. If it's not a good match for you or it's too much a burden, we have top-notch breeders right here on the site that can take care of all your bluey needs.
You'll love having one, in any case, this I guarantee.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The only reason I didnt think dog food was good, becuase I hadnt read about it on any caresheet, even this one.
Also, I want to clear something up. He said he does give him his veggies, but im not sure they are the right ones. Sicne I do have a beardie, and he needs his salad, Im aware that they need collard, mustard, turnip greens, ect..
So its not all bad, but im guessing he is on sand, which runs the risk of impaction, bacteria, and paracites.

I love rescuing and rehabilitating reptiles, but I cant do it when I already have 14 reptiles to care for. I do have plenty of money, but it is saved up for a hatchling lepard gecko rack, since the next season isnt to far away and im going to ahve a bunch of breeder females.
The other thing that turned me off was he was asking for money for it, which I thought is ridiculous. If i did get it, I would be rescuing it and he himself knows his cage is to small, therfore he is selling it. I just think its stupid and irrisponsible on his part. Im going check it out, and if it doesnt meet the a clean bill of health, Ill probably pass it up. I also told him id list it for him on a few classifieds, such as this one.
Thanks.
Also, can you give me a weekly feeding schedule, like how much and how many days a week they get salad, and how many roaches they get per day..

I believe most people feed their skinks every other day approximately the amount that would fit in a jar lid. Some do feed everyday though. As for live feeders, I only offer about once a week (dusted in calcium) in place of a normal feeding. Others may do differently so keep reading.
Too bad the guy wants money for an animal he knows you'll have to go spend money on to properly house and possibly vet. I'm a sucker for a neglected animal so I'd like to see it get some compassion and a new home.

Yeah, but 40 bucks is not at all a bad price for a Bluey, especially if his fecal checks out OK!!
See if you can get the whole set up included and then use the 'too small' cage for your leopard geckos or a young beardie later!
(I have like 6 empty cages kicking around for when my current critters outgrow their current homes!)
Either way, let us know what happens with the skink, I can't believe someone would neglect one, they are really rewarding and fun to have!

It all depends on how much your personal philosophies coincide with how much money you're really willing to spend and all that jazz...
...if it's a good reptile going to a better home for a cheap price, well heck then.
I actually feed Rollie about two to three times per week. It keeps him hungry, which keeps him eating what he sometimes doesn't like, and he keeps a trim belly. He'll get a random blueberry or strawberry slice between days just because he's cute.
