OT - rosies, Kenyan sand boas, or western hoggies?

Postby Corycat » Sat Jun 04, 2005 9:00 pm

Okay, once we're in the new apartment, and all of my reptiles are settled in...what kind of snake should I get next? I want them to be breeders.

I know the basics on these species and just have no idea what to choose - they're all beautiful. I'm leaning more toward the boas, though, because I like the thought of them bearing live young...

Please give me your opinions! Thanks in advance!

This is NOT a positive thing and this may or may not happen!

Tough choice as I used to own a Rosy (Errness has him now), currently own a Kenyan and would like a Western Hognose. I think you'd enjoy any of them, but I just love the cute little face of a Kenyan

Also, if you are into morphs then Kenyans have more to offer.

So are you still selling Frodo? Why did you get rid of the rosy first? Just curious!

I voted Western Hognose, because I had thought if I ever did get a snake that would be the kind I would want.
( I am very skeptical though when it comes to snakes....one of those fear factor things. I have never held a snake, but I am really interested in the Western Hognose. )
When we went to NC to the reptile show....I looked and looked for a Western Hognose, I wanted to see if I found one, if the seller would let me hold it. I asked everybody I saw selling snakes if they had any. There wasn't one Western at the whole show!! So I am yet to face my fear. If I had held one and was comfortable with it....I would have bought one.

I voted hoggie because I think they are so darn cute! I seriously considered getting one for the longest time. I don't have any personal experience owning snakes though so I'm probably not the person to ask.

I can't vote because I don't know anything about snakes!

Frodo is still for sale. The only reason I am selling him (and sold my rosy) is because I could not get them to eat f/t (actually the rosy did eat f/t once but never again). But Errness has managed to get the rosy eating f/t now. I don't see it ever happening with Frodo - stubborn little cutie. But at least he doesn't eat every week or that would be a lot of trips for mice. He's coming out of his winter fast and is only eating monthly now. I think (not sure need to check my log) that he usually eats every other week at the most (with some periods of eating weekly, or monthly like now or even not at all during winter).

Otherwise, I would have never considered selling them. But at least I know the rosy has a good home now - and he's getting big!

And remember, for some reason I'm a wimp and can't touch live mice (so it becomes a chore trying to put the mouse in for Frodo and if he doesn't eat it taking it out and offering to another snake - all without touching it).

I can handle a live rat (did at the zoo for educational purposes) and I have no problem touching dead rodents, but just have a problem with the live food.

But one day I do want another Saharan, Roughscale and Rosy....that eat f/t. :)

Okay I went for the Kenyan Sand Boas.

The western hoggies are definitely cute, but they remind me too much of rattlesnakes and well...they just aren't my favorite critters to look at :( I'm sure even rattlers are very sweet in their own way...just not my cup of tea.

The Rosy boas are pretty but I love the faces of the Kenyans AND I love that they are so colorful and there's quite a bit of variety! :D

Its Pink, not Red, Dixie..

I like the look more actually. I don't like the hognose snake look at all. It's just me I guess, but I don't think they are very cute.

I voted for the hognose because, while I'm not into snakes, I relly like those cuties. If I can ever talk the husband into snakes (remember, nothing that doesn't have shoulders!), I'm getting a western hognose!

I'm not allowed to have snakes. Nothing that doesn't have shoulders! (Apparently, corn snakes have shoulders!)
