My BTS keeps Climbing the wall!

Postby Dakota55555 » Sun Jun 13, 2021 11:27 am

Hi all,

this is Dakota! : https://imgur.com/a/EuCMOGJ : Indonesian's islands - Merauke,

I hope that some of u can help me with Dakota his climb problems, cuz right now im kinda lost, Dakota keeps climbing the wall no matter what,
i recently upgraded his whole enclosure, i made is so natural as i can, ive readed that walk space is very important for blue tongue skinks, he has a water suply to drink out, he has a swimming pool for cooling off or when he is shedding,
he has a huge tunnel to play and go trough, here is a picture of his enclosure : https://imgur.com/a/C4gZte7 :

he never diggs honestly i dont know why but thats not my biggest problem atm, my biggest problem is that he is climbing the wall every day around a couple of hours, sometimes he does basking under the uwv lamb but not always, he searching for high places to climb and than climbs the glass and problably falls down, so ive heard and readed a lot about blue tongue skinks ofc i dont believe all of it so thats why i went to this website,

so my Question is: why is he climbing all the time ? : is climbing always a bad thing or stress or can it also be a good thing ? or how can i prevent it if its a terible of bad thing that blue tongue skink are exspressing ? or is there something wrong with his enclosure or to little room to walk or something like that,

He doesnt get iritated under his belly, he eats normal, he has a 120x50x50 enclosure wich ive heard is more than enough,
he drinks, he basks sometimes,

So ye i hope u guys can help me out, so far ive tryed a lot of things and it didnt got less but just as much,

so thanks for the help <3

Maybe he's bored? You can try adding some more enrichment, he's probably trying to find ways to entertain himself. You got some hides and small plants in there but you can try adding in bigger plants too for your BTS to look at and hide behind. Maybe two or three big plants with the base buried under the substrate would do. Sometimes a background helps too since it gives them something to look at and you might be able to get away with just adding a background instead of the plants. Or you could do both, up to you. It just looks/feels like there's something missing but I can't pin exactly what that would be.

Your substrate also looks low, it would be difficult for him to bury himself in that and make tunnels. You could definitely add substrate up to the bottom of the black edge on all sides like it looks like you did on the far left of the picture. That might introduce some lacking digging behaviors.

Second the above re: substrate level and enrichment. Include an additional hide perhaps.
Males can go through phases of restlessness, may pass with time.
Id also add having a glass enclosure can exacerbate "glass surfing" as you're experiencing. You may be able to somewhat remedy this by blacking out the back and side panels of the enclosure.

I always notice my skink doing that when it can't find a place to dig into or burrow itself into the substrate, what material you used as substrate? try change to something else, and yes, how depth is your substate?
