How many of you wash hands....
How many of you wash your hands RELIGIOUSLY before and after holding your BTS? Be honest, or this is pointless. Remember, it's 100% anonymous!

I wash my hands before handling and after handling each pet. I wash my hand like a hundred times a day between feeding them and cleaning cages and just spending some contact time with them.

I don't think germs are becoming any more immune to hand sanitizer than they are to soap. I don't know; I use a high alcohol content one, and I think alcohol is a pretty effective germ killer.
But with all the disinfecting nowadays, germs are getting pretty resistant. There's also the fact that they always say things like "Kills 80% of germs/Kill 95.6% of germs" blah blah blah. That sort of means that the small percentage it isn't effective against have a great environment in which to reproduce like crazy.
It's really hard to completely disinfect things like our hands. I think all this constant emphasis on disinfecting everything is becoming a little much and that sterile environments aren't really meant for the home--they're more for a hospital environment. But I'm kind of rambling now.
In conclusion

I brought a mini hand sanitizer thing to Disneyland and used it all the time. Just the thought of all those hands on the ride handlebars......
I'm religious about washing my hands. The thought of someone not washing their hands after the public restroom sickens me -- Sometimes while I'm washing, I'll see someone walk straight out of the bathroom without washing -- I ALWAYS say WASH YOUR HANDS!!! Can you imagine shaking hands with him if you saw him? He'd do it too seconds after.........
The stat I know is 1 in 3 don't wash hands after using restrooms. I don't see how that's possible.

Public places can be nasty. Actually, just places with a lot of people can be really gross--for example, the co-op I lived in for almost a year.

Come to think of it, I rarely get a cold. I wonder if it's from my constant hand washing.
One thing that is VERY, VERY weird is that many restrooms have a door that you have to pull to open (to leave). So, all the people who DO NOT wash their hands are opening this door, so anyone who DOES wash their hands, well, it ruins the whole purpose of the store providing sinks and soap. Complete idiots. I use a paper towel to open every bathroom door in a pubic area -- but some are nice where you can just push it open with your foot.

I've actually heard of studies (this is secondhand, so if I'm wrong, nobody shoot me down please) that constant disinfecting might be leading kids to a higher likelihood of allergies. And less resistance to things like colds, etc. Bad germs do serve a purpose in our lives--they give us resistance and build up our immune systems. Weak immune systems kill (such as AIDS). Not that I'm trying to say disinfecting gives you a weak immune system. But I think a certain amount of exposure, especially when you're young and growing, can be a good thing.
You'll probably be so grossed out by this--but my mom has actually eaten soil.

Why eat soil? Trying to become immune to tetanus?
It's a long story. I guess the shortened version is... she got really sick, couldn't eat/keep down any foods, started reading about therapies for this kind of stuff. This guy who had Crone's (sp?) disease and supposedly cured himself was selling this product that had soil bacterium that were supposed to be good for you. My mom wanted to save money. She ate some dirt out of our garden.
She's a very unique lady.
