BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

I was wondering when most of you feed their skink and how long you wait after feeding before taking him/her/them out?

Thanks... I was wondering cause I know snakes can throw up if you handle them after feeding... I always let Dundee and Wally digest a bit before taking them out... but I was wondering how long people wait before taking them out

I normally feed around 3:00 and then give it an hour or so to take them out. My guys tend to eat the then go directly under the basking light. If they are basking I won't disturbe them. Sometime I feed them out of the tank and then continue to let them wander around.

Yeah, I always feed Dundee in a dish on my desk... I like watching him eat...

With five now I can't always take them out to eat. I love to watch them eat too!

It's funny how they Dundee chews the chicken and licks is lips with his tongue every time he takes a new bite... lol

I feed mine around 4ish and hold him around 6 or later.

Jubby comes out about 7pm. We sit and cuddle for about 10 mins then he heads off to his food. He then wanders for about an hour till 8.30pm, then onto the lap under the blankie with me for another hour till 9.30pm, then back to the tank with the lights on until about 10.30pm.

I got my first ear plug last night

To be honest, I don't hold Neo. He just gets stressed and hissy, he knows me enough that I won't hurt him when I do tank maintanence.

Thats pretty much how I feel about any animal. I only hold them enough to keep them tame because I know they don't like it.

I mean, if I had a BTS who didn't mind, or fell asleep when I held them, that would be different. But that's not my case, and I would rather cuddle with my rats anyway

I'd do the same, but Dundee goes under the door of the top and climbs on my hand and then watches the world from my shoulders...

I disagree that "they don't like it". I think if they are aggressive or nervous by nature, then sure, they might be freaked when you handle them. Most of my BTS come alive when I handle them and interact with them. They act excited and curious. Now, whether you can label that as "they like it" or "they don't like it"....whatever. My strong belief is that they benefit from human interaction, and that's just yet another reason why captive bred pets are SO much better and more important opposed to WC.

I think if you gave Neo a chance, you'd have a bit of a different opinion. Besides, handling your BTS is a big part of enjoying it. I know that's a broad statement and not true for everyone, but for the most part, handling and interaction is my favorite aspect of owning these creatures. To say: "I don't handle my BTS because he doesn't like it" makes me kind of sad. That's what Petco employees tell me. And their reasons are essentially the same as your's.

I know some veteran keepers will disagree in a sense as they keep them more for observing.

I think the important thing is to know your skink and plan his cuddle or time out of the cage to fit him. Spike, Frankie and Stella can be plopped down in the middle of my floor or the backyard and they are ready to go. They don't care about people or the cats wandering around with them. They will also sit with me a chill without the added benifit of a blanket or anything. Saphira is turning out the same way she just isn't big into cuddling yet. She would rather run around like a crazy head. Baylee is very different. He loves to cuddle as long as he's in a blanket, sleeve or sweatshirt pocket. When he's out of his cage he likes to have a lot of cover (flower beds, blankets). I think he enjoys coming out because he comes to the door of the cage and stares at me until I take him out. I just try to make it as stress free for him as possible.

My strong belief is that they benefit from being out of their cages and being allowed to explore, but I am positive they couldn't care less about human interaction.

I'm more inclined to agree with you Edward. I believe that they 'tolerate' it - some more so than others.
