Can Someone ID our buddy?

Postby Skinky » Tue May 29, 2007 4:45 pm

Hi everyone. We are hoping that someone can help us in ID-ing out BTS. At first, we thought he was IJ, then as we saw more pics, we started thinking Indonesian, now we think he may be Merauke. What do you think?

I would say it is a merauke.
Look at the merauke pic on this site where it is hanging in a series of three pics.
Anyway, look at the pattern, the legs, and the neck.

We haven't measured him, but i would say he is just about 2 feet, or 23 inches long. He is fully grown, about 4 years old, and VERY Handsome!! :D

Even I, master at screwing up the identification of Meraukes, had the first impression of Merauke without question. Beautiful animal. :)

Definitely. Merauke are somewhat rare compared to Indos and IJ's. Creating a cross between the two would be a shame. Check out the latest thread on the topic!

thanx for the advice guys, I'll definitely give it more thought before I decide what I'm gonna do. However, maybe someone can answer this....Would IJ's and Merauke breed with each other in the wild?? They're reletively close geographically seaking?? just wondering

In areas where two species (of any animal) meet, there is often hybridization to some degree, but it's minute. In the case of BTS, it's something like .5%-1% of total wild BTS populations. Since captive BTS are so scarce, we don't recommend it.
