A little Breeding talk!

Alright so I have two Northerns and they are never Available Around here so I would like to breed. I have two that I got as pets but now have decided why not breed. I have one that is almost two years old and one that is almost 1 1/2. Now if the younger is a male then I could breed. My question is when I take them out together the bigger on charges the little one and trys to bite. I have not put them through brumutation so either I have two male or they are trying to breed??? Would two female charge and attack each other? Thanks I am glad I found a forum of just BTS lovers!

Frome what i've experienced in regards to breeding - it sounds like you have 2 males. however - I don't have northerns - and you could have an over aggressive male. Got any pics??? We all love pics and it could help.

Mating is specific. If the charging BTS is just biting random parts to try to hurt the other animal, it's far different than an interested stare, then a bolt toward the BTS with a firm bite. If they haven't brumated, the would-be female could be defensive as well.

Usually, if two animals are trying to kill each other, they're likely males, if both animals don't do anything dramatic, you might have two females.

If the one animal is NOT fighting back, let the charger grab on and see what he does....just be 100% sure that they both Northerns?

I will post pics in a bit, My bigger one is the one who charges. The other one really does not do anything. Yes I am sure they are both Northerns. The first attempted bite was to the belly area and the second was to the tail. I grabbed him/her away before anything could happen. I will go get pics now.

Alright here are pics, first two are the bigger one, next two are the smaller one and last two the big one is one the left.






When I had them together they acted a bit different then when I last had them together. The smaller one was even smaller and since then has caught up. They both kinda avoided each other. The small one wags his/her tail slowly almost like he/she is trying to bring attencion to the tail. Tell me what you all think....thanks

you seem to be describing the mating ritual so to speak - nice blueys! Comet has great patterns - titan is nice too - I would love a northern!

Try this: base of the tail just behind the back legs - gently push in lightly like you're pinching from either side of the tail. Is it soft or hard?

soft (in my exp) means male - hemipenes sit in there.
hard (in my Exp) means female - no Hemipenes.

The wagging tail is a great sign for being female! biting the tail is actually not uncommon -- they nip at the sides, tail, and eventually get a firm lock on the nape.

Alright thanks I will try the puching thing on the tail. I had them together to take pictures and they acted kinda weird. Like I said comet was wagging his/her tail but not fast or anything. He also does that when you are by him/her. Is he/her just trying to make a distraction or what? Thanks for the comments on there patterns! I like them alot to.

Ok so tried what you said blotch. It is kinda hard to know what hard or soft on a BTS it like but fight behind the legs just at the start of the tail there is a slight dip in and it felt soft to me on both of them. If you think I should get pictures of that tell me and I will

My female northern doesn't like my male at all. She tries to get him any time she sees him.

nice looking northerns,males can also wriggle there tails in anticipation of male combat,my blotcheds and easterns do that frequently over the breeding season,my suggestion is introduce them for brief periods but keep an eye on them as northerns are renowned for attacking each other,and can easily cause serious to fatal wounds to one another,or take of each others tails,so best bet is to always watch them when there together,just for piece of mind,that way u can let the charger go for a bit to see if he actually is trying to copulate,or just maim a cage mate,they are aggressive when mating,so u have to give them a chance to see if thats what there trying,not easy for begginners,i always feel sorry for the females but it is natural,usually the male will follow the female around constantly licking and nudging and trying to hold on to her,at first the female trys to get away but the male is pretty constant with his attention,but with male combat ,they bite to hurt,to be the dominate male,and charge after the other male/s,to some it can be hard to tell the difference,but with experience its not to difficult,if there trying to copulate,the male trys to position him self with the female,and will use his rear legs to try to arrouse her and get her to accept him by lifting her tail,the problem is the female wont always be so accepting and will try to get away,the males r very persistant though,keep us posted on there progress,and there behaviours,and keep asking questions

Well I put them in one cage for a little bit (always watching because I did read they can cause quick damage) My bigger on just kinda walked around like nothing happend and is he/she stepped close to the smaller one the smaller one would open its mouth and do a small lung. he/she did not try and bite just to scare. Then the rest of the time when ever comet (which is the little one) would get near titan(the bigger one) titan would walk away and wanted nothing to do with comet. Comet did not really follow titan but kinda slowly took a step closer every little bit.

This is like Enzo. It's hard to place them together to get Eugene interested, because Enzo will not be aggressive, but will slowly walk over to him, and then just bite him!
