As always, such beautiful and healthy skinks, Colin! Thank you for sharing the pictures, they look quite different to the SA easterns, those eye stripes are so sharp, aren't they? The south Aussie easterns are a little more muted around the eyes, but have such a beautiful yellow tummy with almost a marmalade pattern of orange! :ohyes:

How are your shinglebacks, Colin? :D

I find it interesting that Easterns in the US have no eye bands. In regards to the hybrid thread Zach - that would surely have to be the result of hybrids?!?!?

It probably is the result of hybridizing, in which we see the negative results. The loss of that gorgeous eyeband. However, it may also be due to the breeding of easterns which lacked the eyeband or had it faded. This would be more selective breeding. Still, it's so sad that we've lost that amazing trait. Keep the pictures coming Colin. Very beautiful.

I think it also has to do with the fact that not all easterns have the eye bands. If the original stock came from a part of Australia where easterns don't have the black band, then the american easterns won't have them.

Agreed. Ray kind of explained this to me when discussing his stock. He gave me a brief history of the general area where a lot of his easterns came from a while ago.

I've talked about it with Ray too. I figured I would post about it since he's not always able to and is busy with the babies.

That's a very interesting story. It's part of the reason why I'm almost impartial to the export ban....

Wouldnt worry zac,Eastern is wrong, scincoides is just the more coastal type of bluey species, they would go right round australia but tracts of the SA,and WA coastal areas are not suitable for the species so they didnt make it to parts of south west australia that are suitable.Northern is just a type of eastern,no different to blotchy from NSW and a victorian type, they just never made the victorian types sub species, type nigrolutea i believe was from the blue mountains in NSW.Scincoides from sydney, wollongong nowra and southern highlands ive seen all have the black eye band, parts of west NSW is brownish, noethern coastal NSW is brownish like those from brisbane. The scincoides from cairns are light with the eye band and grow really large, there about as up north as youll get and there easterns, ide say the ones from the top end like darwin are just coloured and sized accordingly to the conditions where they live, sub species possibly.Best to preserve regional types of scincoides if you can,iof you cant do the best you can.

Your words are true....we're just so comfortable with the Eastern/Northern differentiation, but in all honesty, they are relatively the same. There are certainly numerous difference, but there are lots of differences seen between some BTS that are NOT separated into subspecies as well.

Blotch,

Go have a look at the Qld easterns.... some don't have eyebanding. I've seen a few in S.A. that do not have eyebanding as well.

Nothing to do with hybridising at all.

My eastern came from Ray Gurgui, and his animals are not hybridized. Rollie has no eye banding because of regional differences.

I realise this - but i was under the impression that was due to them mating with northerns. cuz northerns and eastern offspring aren't able to be classified as hybrids. didn't know easterns in SA were the same.
