? about Spots Stew and a few more

I will be picking my first BTS on Monday. My local Pet Store (Exotic Tropicals) has delt with BTS's before and actually has a really nice breeder in town that I got to talk to. I've seen the animal I'm buying and I am super excited! It is a she and she is right at a year old. I forgot what kind I was told it was. Anyways I have all of my tank plans worked out and ordered through my local pet store. Just waiting for all of it to arrive and get it all set up and to let it all sit for 24 hours then they are going to help me to make sure all of the temps and basking temps are correct with real world data.

Sorry for the babbling about that but I'm just so excited to add a BTS to my critter collection.

I have been doing tons of reading and I read all of Zach's care sheet several times and after doing some reading on here I have run across Spots Stew. From the indgredients it seems as if it is a really well blended food.

So my question is, is the stew ok as a food used, say every other feeding or so. I would like to give my new skink a good healthy diet with diverse foods, but with it being pre-made it sure would be simpiler! Not that I'm lazy.

If the stew is def. a good food to use. Would it be a good idea to maybe put some fresh greens and veggies in with it or what exactly. The only thing that I am a still a little fuzzy about is what exactly is the best type of foods, and foods that would be easily found at my local pet store of if veggies and fruits, something I could find at Kroger or Bilo.

Sorry for the long post but this is my first one and I'm all over joyed. The BTS that I am receiveing has such a cool and fun personality. I got to handle and spend some time with her and I think she is the perfect BTS for me. I've been looking at getting one for over 2 months now, just doing all of the research I can first.

seems like a decent substitute to fresh food mixes, especially with the variety in it. I've heard a couple people mention it not having all that much chicken in it though, so you might want to add something to it(worms, snails, etc). I picked up a can of the cat food today to try this evening. my baby indo loves the dog variety i found out today, and the cat (while being more expensive.. ugh) has less water and more chicken it seems. The softness made it easy for Marley to eat, and he seemed to really like it. Plus it's prolly overall cheaper than buying the squash and everything else in it semi-regularly if you use it as a occassional bluey food. Hope anything I said helped!

I tried spot stew and he wouldn't touch it. I thought it looked good too! Oh well.
I picked some fruits & veggies from the food list on this site and mulched them up in the food proccessor and devided into ziplocs and froze. I vary this mixture every time depending on what the produce looks good. I also cooked some chicken breast and cubed and froze. When I prepare Flints food I break off a chunk of veggie/fruit and some chicken and thaw in microwave, then I chop up almost equal amounts of greens (Collard, mustard) and mix it all together. I ad calcium/vitamins once every week or 2...I also vary the protien, wellness cat food is high quality and grain free. I sometimes put mealworms instead. He will eat crickets on occasion mostly for fun. I am going to cook him some turkey breast next and find some silk worms and snails. Anyway, he is growing and thriving, has shed twice in 5 weeks.

I was looking over the ingredients on the cat formula, and was interested to see Taurine(the main ingredient other than caffeine in red bull energy drink) close to the end of the list. I wonder if it's enough to have any sort of "upper" effect on marley?

Taurine is added in cat food because it is an essential nutrient that cats must have to live. They need more of it than may other animals.

spots stew has no greens so they have to be added. There also isn't a lot of chicken in spots stew, so if you are feeding to a baby, you'd have to add that in as well. With additives, it is a decent meal as long as you change it up a bit and don't feed it exclusively.

I always add greens and more veggies to the Spots Stew. Mix up the greens/veggies and provide a lot of variety. Don't forget fruits and some other more 'natural' prey foods. The food charts will help you figure out the best and worst foods to feed. You can use it to figure out what is available to you and how often to feed different foods.

Red Bull takes its name from Taurine. Taurine is named after the Latin taurus (which means bull), when it was first discovered in bull liver bile.

Taurine is often called an amino acid but it lacks a carboxyl group and is not an amino acid in correct biochemical terminology.

Humans and other mammals can synthesize enough Taurine, but cats can't. Taurine is said to be beneficial to alcoholics and after binge drinking, thus the Red Bull hangover drink of choice.

Taurine doesn't give the "upper" effect, the caffeine does. So Marley is safe unless you suddenly notice him making frequent runs to the convenience store and cans of Red Bull piling up in the recycle bin.
