snails on sale
Hate to put in a plug for a petstore but Petsmart has their black mystery snails on 5 for $5. Just thought some of you might want to get a few!

Bah, I have black sand or I would want some. I have no idea whats wrong. I had 8 adult snails for a couple months, and in 3 days 5-6 have died on the filter(or died and soon after got sucked onto it, even though I had some nylon material filtering 90% of the intake).
were any other colors on sale?

Can you set up a sponge filter in your tank instead? I don't seem to have any problems with HOB filters, but definitely never had any with sponge filters. They are very easy to make with a replacement sponge, some airline tubing, a short bit of rigid tubing, an airstone and an air pump.
It may be your water parameters, too. Were you doing water changes? Snails are pretty sensitive. Also, their shells must be maintained or they become jeopardized. A high calcium diet is essential for them.
Sorry you lost so many

snails
I haven't had much luck with snail breeding. I tried mystery snails but they kept going dormant. The few times I had eggs, the fish found them first. I would set up a second tank if I thought I'd have some success. The apple snail links from BTS.net made it sound easy...
Sorry if this was a teaser to those of you who don't have Petsmarts or can't buy mystery snails where you live. I just wanted those of you who could to benefit from this sale! I may have to go back. Somehow, the one snail I bought was deemed "pet" by my children. Poor Pele'.

I just bought some and put them in my pond... Blue doesn't like snails, go figure

The Humane Society took Michael Vick's pit bulls, asked for public money to help them, then decided it would be best to kill them... adopt from No Kill shelters http://www.roas.petfinder.com

cheap snails
Pele' eats snails almost daily (since I find these all over our greenbelt.) I'm beginning to rethink this though---since I would freak out if anything ever happened to him. Two of my nervous neon tetras (that I bought the day I posted this) have already died. I'm going to see if Petsmart will refund me snails instead of fish. The problem is that my "peaceful, community fish" (zebra danios) keep tormenting my snails and eating their eggs. Are you sure it isn't safe to feed my bluey fish!
Funny what a fine line their is between pet and prey. Unfortunately, when you have kids, they dictate how that line is drawn!

appreciate the info Aggie, even though they will blend in with the sand, I went and picked up 4 black mystery snails to replace my lost ones. The lady at petsmart also let me run wild and collect as many pond snails from the tanks as I wanted to. I ended up with 100-150 common pond snails and little ramshorns. Most of em are now in my snail tank, other than the dozen or so in Marley's belly, haha.

My daughter is very "well rounded." She absolutely loves animals, but when it's time for mice or rats for the snakes or other lizards she torments them. (But, in a sweet way!!) She'll look at the mice (or whatever) and say, "You're so cute!! I bet you're going to taste good too!!" (She's special!!)

I can't quite decide whether that's well rounded or just plain scary

Sounds like my 6-year-old...here is dinner, eat up before it escapes.
She likes to play with the superworms and butterworms too, she thinks they are cute.

Leigh and Toad
I still haven't figured out the quote thing (and I did read how to but I STILL haven't managed to do it correctly.
)
Toad, I must send my daughters to your daughter for de-sensitivity training! I've always worried that my older one hated and might hurt my (oh, I mean my son's
) bluey for eating the "cute little snails."
Leigh, please do explain how raising terrestrial snails is "easy." I had them in a plastic tub that they slimed and I had to clean daily. When they had eggs, they never hatched. I would like to set something up outside. So, details please!

Ah Ha so that's how you breed land snails, it really is easy isn't it.
Sorry couldn't resist.
