Lilly the Skink! - Pics :)

Postby wastedindustry » Sat Jun 02, 2007 8:17 am

Lilly arrived today :)

She's in excellent condition (if a bit fat) and very friendly, although a little nervous at present.

So as promised, pics for you lot - I did get one tongue shot but it was well out of focus :( More to come, though!

I'd be interested to know your views on what type of Bluey she is - I'm pretty sure she's an Indonesian, but I could very well be wrong.

Hope you like her - we certainly do! :D

She looks great!!! If you cut back a little on the food she'll sleak down a little for you.

Do you guys reckon she's particularly fat?

We need to remedy her diet - for her entire life (apparently) she's been fed exclusively on Cesar dog food and pinkie mice, which doesn't exactly sound well-rounded. She took a rosechafer larva as soon as she was placed in the viv though, which I guess is a good thing - shows she's not nervous about us :)

I'd call her a full figured skink! A diet of dog food and pinkie mice is definetly going to pack on the pounds. You are going to want to get some veggies/greens in there. Be prepared for it to take a while to switch her off a diet of just dog food. Cut the veggies and greens up really small at the beginning and slowly cut down the amount of dog food and up the amount of greens and veggies. Don't get alarmed if she doesn't eat it at first. She can definetly go a while without eating so hold out until she starts eating the good for her food.

full figured for sure, I like the look of plump skinks (assuming it isn't posing a negative health issue)! Hopefully Marley will be about that size one day =)

Awesome looking skink though, very pretty coloring. She looks very indo to me. Looks like a lighter Marley, has the same dark legs, the same little stripe behind the head on the spine, and very similar back/belly/tail patterns.

There's just more of her to love that's all. As Jenn recommended cut up the veggies and greens really small and add it into her food. I use the smallest food processor they make, and it works great. you might also consider using some baby food in there as well; a lot of time when the food is all mushed together it's hard to pick out the pieces they don't like. try varieties like sweet potato (which is my skink's absolute fav) or squash, and maybe a fruity one for a treat.

Merauke? Really?

I checked her over fully and I could have sworn she was an Indo. I don't mind either way of course ;)

They look quite similar in a lot of ways, but Meraukes have a longer tail.

Of course, there is that whole debate about whether Indos and Meraukes are different enough to be considered separate species, but if we tread lightly, we won't disturb it.

Heh :)

She does have a very long tail, but her markings looked very Indo. I think we'll say she's a Merauke for now - I've looked back through the pics on here and she does resemble them a bit more than the Indos (I think...).

Yep, check out the speckled forelegs, cleanly striped tail, light brown/grey color, long tail, and massive size! She's as Merauke as they get. :)

Does she have 4 or 5 temporal scales? Compare between Indo and Merauke:

Yep, 5 by the looks of it - you can see them quite clearly on one of the above pics actually.
Thanks for clearing that up :D

Thanks for the kind words - Lilly will appreciate them I'm sure (once she wakes up this morning) :)

More pics will be on their way when we finally have a sunny day and take her out for a bask ;)
