BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

I was cleaning Quigs tank to day and noticed one of his eyes wouldn't fully open and he seemed so light sensative he doesn't even want to go under his heat light so he's been cool and inactive for most of the day.

As you can see here his other eye is fine.



I'm thinking maybe some substrait or something got in there and scratched the cornea, I know when this happend to me it didn't hurt exactly but My eye was so light sensative I couldn't open it and had to wear a patch for 24 hrs. He otherwise seems healthy but I figured I'd see what you all think.

Hmm, is there discharge coming from the eye, or is it dry...?

Little bit of clear discharge not much just enough to build up on the edge of the eye

hes a handsome devil,could be like u said,he may have scratched or irratated it in his cage,ive done it to my eye once as well,had a saw eye in bright light,very sensitib\ve to sunlight,had to waer sunnies out doors and still squiting,but keep an eye on him in case it gets worse,eg gets puffy ect

He hasn't woken up for the day yet (He's a lazy handsome devil) But I'll check it when he de-burrows

what substrate do u use

right now I have the bark stuff (got it before I found this place)

Quigs' eye hasn't changed any since yesterday but it's not any worse. I am changing his substrate to carefresh tonight when the kids go to bed. he still seems healthy in all other ways.

Pele' once retained some shed around his eye and was squinting pretty bad. I thought he was in horrible pain because he was so distressed. And, I didn't realize what was wrong---because the retained skin was the same color as the new skin right on the rim of the eye. Anyhow, I wasn't sure what to do so I took a soft baby washcloth and put warm water over it. Then, I gently rubbed the surface around his eye. The skin came off and he stopped squinting. Your guy's eye looks a little worse than P's and it sounds like he might be uncomfortable. Has he shed recently? Sometimes they scratch at retained skin too---like ear plugs---and he could have injured himself that way. I'm no expert so you might want to check with them before you do this. If he has substrate under the lid and you push hard, you could end up with a corneal abrasion and secondary infection. Sorry, I'm rambling and wish I could do more. Check and see what the others say about trying this.

He did shed recently. So I suppose I'll try wiping it gently. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well he seems to be getting better I've been giving him soaks daily and usuing a ultra soft baby toothbrush to loosen the unshed scales (he seems to enjoy a great deal as he will close his eyes and lean into it)
I've gotten a bit more retained shed off him than I expected and not just by his eye a bit came off his tail and a couple off his neck He still is rubbing that side of his face on anything he can find so I think something is still irritating it but it looks better and the eye ball itself looks normal it's just the lids.

Glad he is doing a little better. Keep us posted if he gets worse or isn't continuing to get better.

Yes a bit of old shed or some forein body appears to have got in there poor darling .Ya can see him squinting and favoring to cover it .See a reptile specialist .We use a genral reptile eye ointment on the Shingles with bobtail influena , Very upsetting to see this ..I use Chloroint

Slow progress. But Much better, I've gotten off a lot of old shed around his eye so much that i am tempted to believe that some is from even before i got him aas he has only shed twice while with me.

Here's some updated pics you can see there is a deffinate difference.

It does appear better , it looks like the lower lid has been affected more than the top lid

yeah ain't he though.

Quigs is almost 100% better now he opens his eye normally and it looks like an eye again after posting pics yesterday i gave him another once over and a nice bit or shed came off the very edge of the lower lid and it had had part of it down inside the lid a little bit so it had been rubbing on his eye poor baby and when he got up today it was almost like he was a brand new skink I'll post some pics tonight a bit later.
