BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Hi yall,
I was wondering how much i need to focus on getting the shed off a yongue blueies' toes. Does it normally come off okay? i know it is a problem with leopard geckos. My new little guys are shedding and i don't want to increase the humidity of the substrate and the overall enclosure too much, so i have a small pocket of bedding that is damp under the ceramic heater.

Hi it is very important you make sure all of the skin is off the toes you could put a large water dish enough for your bluey to soak himself or you can get a shedding aid you spray on . i use the shedding aid my bluey had terrible feet when i got him but they are looking great now

so shedding aids really do work and are pretty safe? I found that lightly rubbing Marley's toes with a q-tip, alternating wet and dry sides helped to remove really loose skin on his little toes.

Thanks guys, Yea i soaked them for about 3 or 4 min this morning to see if i could get some of the little bit extra off but they are so small it is difficult. Do you know how the shed aid is any different than water or something?

Don't know about the ingredients in the shed spray but I just put my guy in my lap and massage his toes with a damp paper towel---the soft, tissuey type. He doesn't mind and the toe sheds are easy to get off. Guess anything is harder with a little guy because they squirm more. Good luck!

Quigs will bite at his toes and dip em in his water to get the shed off em.

What's a q-tip??? surely it's not what is on the end of a pool cue.

I do believe that is what was meant as the major brand name for "cotton swabs" is Q-tips

They got some funny names for things over there Blotch,hee,hee

Ugh, shedding aides......I'm not sure what they can do, what a little water can't do...

Shed seems to come off easier with younger BTS, as they grow older, it seems to get worse generally speaking. The toes are the most important part of the body to keep an eye on in any age though.

ingredients are watersolubizing hydrotrope, glycerin, jojoba, oil and vitamin E acetate in an oil base . i do beleive natural bathing would be best i know blueys can't go to shops and get these aids for themselves but i have to admit it has made a massive difference to my Loui his feet were in an awful state and i tried the q tips warm water bathing and it wasnt helping so i guessed a little helping hand wouldn't come a miss. i am hoping his feet are fixing fine now he has proper husbandry i will not need to intervene but he was very patient and seemed to enjoy all of the fuss.

I put Tink in a bowl where he can soak and luckily his shed was ok. I will have to try the jojoba oil though.

Thanks for all the replies guys. i always knew that it was important for leo's and didn't know how big of a deal it was for Blue tongues. I will continue soaking them until it is all off and they are running around with clean toes.

In case you dont know,it can take over a week for it all to come off the toes, I watch for this long and then help a little to loosen it and most comes off naturally, remember DONT FORCE IT OFF, you could easily break a bone

Does Glycerin help with shedding? How about moisturizing cream? I know that antiseptic cream burns dogs - how does moisturizer go with reps?

Moisturiser burns me mate, I wouldnt use it {for skinks}unless its made from natural ingredients, on that thought I suppose Aloe Vera {neat} would work

yeah I'm thinking something like Sorbolene - just something people may have laying around the house - save the money for something else like food or lights rather than buying un-needed shedding products.

i wouldnt use moisture cream it tends to be thick and may well clog the pores i only use the shedeaze because i know it has been tested on animals and it is very light doesnt feel greasy at all and now i have Louis feet in order im hoping he has less troble now with good husbandry and a very watchful eye

I would use the same thing that they use for leopard geckos: a humid hide.

I think these are an important part of bluey keeping. In the wild, bluies probably do not have shedding problems on a regular basis. For the Indonesian species in particular, I think humidity is an often overlooked part of their husbandry.

But doesnt too much humidity really cause problems with the future? I thought i read that somewhere?
