BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

How do you pronounce "scincoides".
I am curious....

I pronounce it "skin soy ds", probably wrong though.

Not that many Latin-based languages have solid rules, but "intercept" has a "c" with an "sss" sound, and "centipede," has a "c" at the beginning with an "sss" sound. I think I once heard it said "skin-KOY-dees," at one point?"

I know latin dies(day) is pronounced Dee es.....Skin koy dees would sound more greek than latin I think because all the greek names I hear are long Es e.g Hercules, Pericles. I always pronounced it skin koy des with a short E.

Here, it is spoken with the first C as silent and the second one as hard.
Generally, Sin-Koy-dees, or Sin-koyds. Mostly, I hear it spoken as the first one.

And Tiliqua as Teeleeka, Not Teeleekwa (The U silent in this instant).

So, Teeleeka Sinkoydees.
But in a broad Aussie accent of course

James Wilson always pronounced it Skink-oi-dees. I've always followed in his footsteps as much as possible. Man knew BTS at an unimaginable level....

So, yeah, I say it like James does.

I don't know though, you'd think the Aussies would know best....

I've pronounced it like that but i's instead of e's Tiilikwa Sink oids , the thing is if we could hear each other it probablly sounds the same, with accents, better go the bloke on the desk opposite's been ear wigging and hes calling the men in white coats to take me to the nut house, I just spent 5 mins going, sink oids ,skinKOyds and so on in the different accents hee hee

it would make sense to say it SKINK-oids.. ya know, because they're called SKINKS..

I apply vowel rules. sc followed by e or i, the c is silent. eg scene, scent, scissors, science ...

sc followed by a or o or u, the c is spoken. eg scale, scald, scoop, Scotland, sculpt, scuff....

Each to his own. I'm no scientician so I just refer to them as blueys

And Russman, here they are more commonly referred to as lizards. If you said to an average person, 'it's a blue tongue skink' they'd look at you funny. Took me ages when I first found this site to accustom myself to saying skink instead of lizard. I only skink on here

I think essentially it really doesn't matter. They are just called bluetongues here. Or 'eeewwww, is it a snake?'
Only herpy-geeks refer to them by their latin name.
