BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Hey all,
I added the gravel as i said but unfortunetly my little fabric oasis is not there anymore, simply because there was no room in the tank
But i put fabric all over the gravel in the entire tank, so the whole tank is now a oasis

Recently, I have been noticing that Saphia and Eragon are very "close".
They lay together, bask together and follow each other around. Its like they play 'follow the leader' or 'Hide and seek' Its so cute!
I took these photos and thought they were just so adorable!!
They really do look like Best friends!

My alpine and my shingle like to stick pretty close together when they're out and about, it's quite funny to watch them follow eachother around, and if they fall asleep they always 'spoon'.

Well lisa, Im planning on building/buying a enclosure so i can house them seperately.
But thankfully there not eatting each other while im planning, and hopefully they keep it up

That is so adorable! I would love to get my Snape a companion but the last owner had a female and he didn't get along with her so he probly prefers to be the only Bluey in the house
Did you get them at the same time/same age??

I got Saphia first when she was about 1-2 weeks old.
Then 2 weeks later i got Eragon, i think he was about 3-4 weeks.
So there roughly the same age.

Just to repeat, keeping skinks together in a vivarium is a bad idea.

I'm just inserting this to prevent the "...but I saw this one thread where people had two skinks LOVING each other in the same cage," from a newbie...

Ok so what is the real likelyhood of 2 baby blueys harming each other?
I have read things here and there and my 2 babies are together as the guy i got them off said if they are housed together all their life they should be fine. Is that true, is it potluck or will the definately fight?
I do want to keep them together but if i can't then i guess i can't but i'd like to hear both good and bad experiences in this matter....sorry for stealing your thread Funda but i think this info might be helpful to other people than just myself

Kristy, the general consensus on this forum is don't house them together.

However, here in Aus it appears to be a common practice. Provided your tank/enclosure is big enough.

Things to consider:

In the wild they are solitary animals not pack animals. They only come together to mate.

Saying that you've housed bluetongues together and never had a problem, well that doesn't mean it won't ever hapen.

Bluetongues are aggresive towards predators and have a very powerful bite. If they fight, they can inflict terrible injuries or death. A territorial bluetongue may not see his tankmate as a friend, but as an enemy one day. For no reason that we can see, but usually it will be territorial. 'Stop being a basking rock hog' !! When we get angry with someone we yell, but when they get angry they get physical. They are wild animals afterall and doing what comes naturally to them, even if they were bred in a backyard.

Sometimes we see human emotions in our animals (yes! we all do it!), so just because they look like they're having fun together doesn't necessarily mean they are.

Most people like us who choose to have animal companions, we just want what's best for them. So if that means erring on the side of caution and not housing them together, it's better to be safe than sorry, insert another cliche here..... you get what I mean.

To answer your question, there is no definitve right or wrong. Some people do and have never had a problem. Some people have, and with disastrous results.

Babies do tend to be less aggresive than adults. But they do grow fast, your bluetongue will be close to full grown in a year (that takes longer in the wild because they eat less, brumate in winter etc)

Whether you do or don't that's your choice. It's a risk. Like alot of things in life I guess.

Being as this is an information site, it would be irresponsible for anyone (experienced) on here to suggest that housing them together should be ok. We've seen the results, and whether it has only ever happened once, or whether it happens everytime two bluetongues are housed together is, I think, inconsequential. No-one can definatively say it won't.
The chances might be slim, but it's still a chance.

No it was good advice so thank you. I was only planning on one blue tongue but when i got it the guy said, "if you plan on getting another one in the future, best off to do it sooner than later".
So i brought another one, mostly for the blueys benefit, but now i see they don't care for company anyway.
I don't know what to do now, i only have room for one enclosure in my room so maybe i will have to just keep one and find a new home for the other one...im not sure yet, i will think about my options.
I don't want them injured in any way so if seperating them has to be done then fair eough. I just thought i'd ask for sure.

kris21, if there's room for one cage, stack the second on top, or get a bigger tank and put in a divider, just a thought mate

My northerns try and eat my cat's front paws because they look like their white mice.

All of my guys have their own cages. I do allow them out together and depending on the pair, some seem to hang out together, others ignore each other and Frankie (my sweetest skink in terms of people interaction) tries to attack them all. When they are out together they are either in my living room (lots of space to get away and plenty of things to hide under) or my outdoor pit (again lots of space to get away and plenty of things to hide in). I would rather keep them seperated and be safe, then put them together in a cage and risk something happening.

Ok, so how long do i have to seperate them?
They are 15 weeks old at the moment.

Just noticed a guy on petlink.com selling 4 blue tongues and a 6 foot enclosure....would that mean they are kept together?

Yeah, when housing together, it's not if they'll fight, but when.

Big outdoor setups are a completely different scenario...
