New Buddy!

Postby SailleSkinklover » Mon Jul 16, 2007 8:59 pm

HI guys, :D
I emailed Zach already, (thanks for the reply!) I wanted to let you know I am a new BTS owner, and am stoked that I found this site/forum!
I rescued this one from a friend of a friend who couldn't take care of it any more. My skink has the bone deformation (mild) in his tail and there's a "dip" in his spine, but since I've had him, he's fattened up beautifully and looks so much better! I think he's just been really underfed and somewhat malnoursihed. So I am feeding him a wide variety based on the food guide.
Here's a question, whats the best way to transport to and from the vet for check ups with the least stress to my skink?
Also, I'm fairly certain based on pics/research that mine is an IJ, but I'm not sure? and third, should I have the vet sex my lizard, or is there an easy way to tell gender with IJ's?
Here are some pics: This pic is the best one to show his spinal dip.

Hey!

Wow, I don't know if I'd even call that a spinal dip...

I believe you have a Merauke actually! (I don't think you sent pictures via email?)

The best way (I think) is to transport them in a small rectangular rubbermade tub in with a towel inside. If it's a short ride, you don't need holes in it.

For sexing, if the vet can do it via DNA, then that's a good way. If he wants to attemping probing or popping, I would advise against that. Check out the caresheet for lots of other tips and sure fire methods.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Forum! Glad to have you here.

Isn't it possible for a skink (especially a long one) to develop a slight "bend" or "crease" in the middle of their back if they're constantly on their hind legs with their front legs on the sides of their enclosure? If it's possible, the "dip" seems to be in the right place for that.
(Correct me if I'm wrong on this one.)

Hi Everyone, thanks for the warm welcome! So he's not an Irian Jaya, huh? Its good to know, thats why I asked the experts! I'll have to do more research on Meraukes now!
I'll try and post more pics soon. As for the "dip" in his back, he has filled out so much just in the two weeks I've had him! He's lovely, sweet, and he likes mushrooms!
As for bending to have his upper body on the cage, he doesn't do that, at least not since I've had him. But maybe the guy who originally had him kept him in to small an enclosure.
P.S. I need help setting up my avatar, I was a little confused! Thanks!

What a pretty Merauke! Be on the lookout for hemipenes and sperm plugs to confirm he's a male. Is there any Merauke males on the forum? I only know of females :)

Here's a pic of me and my new Bluey. Last night he cuddled down and slept while we were watching the telly. . . I'll have more pics soon! Waxworms were a hit, but I know they're high in fat, so they'll be more a treat.
