Question about caging.

I have Sapphira in a wire bunny cage, those ones you buy built with the removable shelves...I kept one shelf for the basking area in there and of course had to do some plastic mesh on the outside to keep her in the cage.

My question is this...would a glass tank be better then one open to the air?

I have a blanket on the backside of the cage to block air flow, I do live in Florida so the humidity is good and high, we never run aircondition in the house. She has shed great since being here. And eats fine.

What is the temp of your basking spot? What is teh temps of the rest of your cage?

When I first had Frankie I had her in an open aired cage and I didn't have a problem really in the summer but it didn't work in the fall, winter or spring because I could keep the basking spot pretty close but I couldn't keep the rest of the cage warm enough.

Im no expert, but I've seen video of blueys rubbing their noses on the glass in a cage (in an attempt to get out maybe?), and I imagine that if a bluey were to rub his nose around on a wire cage, he might do some damage. Just a thought.

As long as your temps are fine and she has proper hiding spots to get away from a draft, it should be fine.

Yes ive 2 rabbit hutches . They great for summer i can pair up a male/female in them out on the grass ..There escape proof and they have the grass to pick around on and logs to hide in ...

Should be fine in summer, if the temps are ok, you could get some thin plywood sheets cut to size to blank off any sides that might need it in winter.

If you're that worried, some plexi-glass would help box in the enclosure some more... It sounds like it'd be alright as long as the bluey can bury itself, regulate body temperatures (hot/cool sides) and bask.

All the wire is coated with plastic and she does climb the side but never rubs her nose on the cage wire.
The cage is one you buy at the petstore...the white wire with blue bottom and blue shelves. It was what I had and was more floor space then the 40 gallon breeder tank I had planned on.
The house stays warm even in the winter, I kept the sulcata running the floor last winter and they have to stay above 60 at all times. The basking rock right under the heat light is now at 95, then it's about 90 down around it on the shelf, under the shelf is cooler and goes down to 68.
There really isn't any drafts where she's at, I have been watching that, she sits in a corner..in front of a closet and has a bookshelf on one side and a wall on the other. The front is open but no fans or anything near her. I know tortoises don't do well with drafts so I was carefull thinking lizards would be the same. And I have about 4 inches of aspen bedding in the entire cage she goes under her log and buries in that all the time to sleep. The uv light is placed over the entire cage. I need to get pics of this, be alot shorter and you could all see it better! lOL
