I could be wrong, but Doug looks to be a very cute Merauke :D

Looks like the cute kind to me :D Sorry, I'm not savvy on the different kinds yet. He is very cute, though!

A full body picture would probably help in distinguishing between merauke or indonesian. The two are hard to differentiate between. If we could see his tail in proportion to his body it might help, but the clean striping and greyish color does resemble a merauke.

I'd have to say Indo.
Maybe posting more clearer photos of doug will help us accurately identify him.

Looks merauke to me, but a picture showing how long the tail is would be helpful.

I would agree with merauke, but I am not sure.

The traits scream Merauke, but all gigas babies look identical (even keys). We'll have to see what she looks like in a couple months! Likely merauke though.

I thought Merauke too after looking at all photos on here. His tail is about the same length as his body, is this classed as 'long'? Does it make him more likely to be Merauke?

Well, in general, the Indos and Merauke both have really long tails, but the Merauke (once full grown) ends up being REALLY long. Again, as babies, they all nearly look the same and the tails just "look long" -- it's a little early to tell distinguishing by tail.

Let's just give up Merauke. They're too confusing.

I question the subspecies and go back and forth whether it should be separated or not. I suppose there's just too many 'in-between' specimens to really make one solidly stand out from the other. You look at the Kei, Tanimbar, and Northern....all subspecies that share qualities with their nominant specie, but are still very diverse.

"Very" diverse? No more diverse than perhaps separating all of the different Easterns that exist? Or for that matter Northerns?

Don't you just love when Holly pops in answers a random question so that no one even notices right away that it was her? :D

I do.

We all heard the same thing about you ya know. It's not fair to negate someones existance just because they can't understand normal thought.
