stupid question...

Postby megaabel » Tue Sep 04, 2007 9:50 pm

I know... that male blueys... shot semen sometimes right??? ... but do females have a period? (Are they going to bleed??? )

I am sorry... I am just have to make a choice by Sat... and I don't know if I want a male or a female...

poof!! tough descisions!!!

I certainly appreciate all the input!

I really want to make the right decision. Everyone recommends a Northern.... but I really want a white little baby.

I know its difficult to see what they will grow up to be like...

but the pictures of the ones I've become obsessed with are the beautiful WHITE ONES... (not the albinos) but the white tanimbars.

I am not sure if only the Silver tanimbars are white... are there other species that also have white bodies? I really want a white one... but I know that personality is more important than looks!! BUT I REALLY WANT A WHITE ONE!!! :)

call me crazy! :)

Well i have no idea about that but i don't think it will be something you have to worry about if you get a girl but if you want a baby you probably won't know what sex it is anyway.

:D :D :D :D I love it! No, I've never heard of females "bleeding" per se, as they're not mammals. But I don't have a female, so I'll leave that to the more experienced forum members.

Chuffer does drop sperm-plugs. He's only ever done it when he pees and poos though, so its everything in one package so to speak. He gets a little edgy before he does it, but then he's fine afterwards. (Maybe he just doesn't like me watching him go to the bathroom! ) He seems to do it more frequently as the days have gotten shorter, he never did it when I first got him, so I didn't even know he was a "he" until about a month ago!

As for personality from male to female, from what I hear on the forum, its all up to the individual skink! But also from what I hear, the Tanimbars can be feisty, unless handled every day. I don't have any personal experience with Tannys though, so I can't say.
Mine is a Merauke and he was a rescue, and I love him to pieces. He's been through hell and I wouldn't change anything about him other than for the rest of his life to be fun, fulfilling, and comfortable.

So while I would love a melanistic (all black) skink just 'cause they look sooooo cool and Goth, I feel so lucky to have Chuff Chuff in my life just the way he is! :D

I hope you find a wonderful little skinker to love very soon! :cloud9:

No, females don't menstruate. And males don't always drop sperm plugs, either.
It can be almost impossible to determine sex in an adult, let alone a baby.
And at the end of the day, there is practically no difference, either visually or behaviourally, between males and females. I'm pretty sure two of mine are female, but I still refer to them as male.

Tannies aren't actually white, they're grey or silver. They are the only species that come in that colour, although some others go almost white when they shed.

If you want an animal that you want to interact with (not like a dog of course! bluetongues don't catch frisbees or come up to you for cuddles!), then I'd stick with a northern or IJ, but if you want more of an observational animal, then go with the Tanny. We cannot keep them here, but from what I've read, I don't think Tannies are the best introduction to bluetongue keeping.

menstruate...that's the word! :) i blanked... I knew it!

Postby megaabel » Tue Sep 04, 2007 10:24 pm

I totally understand... now. I am happy to get a healthy cute little one. I will see what the future awaits. I appreciate all the knowledge you are passing on to me! :)

Male or Female... who cares!!! I want the one that picks me! right?

I like a challenge and I am very much involved w/all my animals, so a Tanimbar still sounds more down my alley. I can dedicate myself enough to him or her.... and maybe w/enough love and care...they will be less touchy... and become the best pet he or she can be.... I am very sure that my new skink won't be anything like a mammal, say my dogs for instance; but I expect that! Duh! Besides.. my dogs... are too very challenging breeds..not like other dogs... they don't catch frisbies... or come to anyone. They are sort of the pain in the butt breeds too!

So I guess its part of my nature to always go for the more hard to understand types of pets :)

oh and boyfriendS! :) hahaha!

I am very excited to find out more and more everyday about my new little bluey and see what the future awaits! :)

thanks again! :)

Hey, I didn't mean to sound like a smartarse with the dog bit!
It's just sometimes people come on here and they're like 'my bluetongue is always sleeping' or 'my bluetongue hates me', like they think it's a domesticated animal.

From what the tanny keepers say on here, alot of them do settle down eventually with handling.

And anyway, if you're going to a show, you'll probably come home with more than one anyway! Dare you not to when you have to narrow it down to just one

Doesnt really matter what sex they are really unless your planning on breeding them.

Males do shoot semen, it comes out and looks like whitish/clear snots

But then again when there young you cant tell what sex they are, and when there older its still hard to tell.
Unless it does that semen thing, then you know you got your self a man!

if all the species were available here, id get all of them! hehehe
i wont mind the sex anyway.

to help you decide, i was wondering if i can keep a tanny also, to be more dedicated in handling and interaction..Bowie, my tanny, is around 2mos old. would always hiss and huff but never gaped just when everytime i run my fingers across his mouth. i handle him everyday. mornings and evenings, practically vevery chance i got. he still pees on my hand everytime i handle him, and yess even got pood. i think thats pretty normal since he is still a baby. its a matter of getting him to me more and giving him time to settle down.
i read that colors lighten up as they grow up.. well again to help you decide here is Bowie..

That's the way I was chosen as the new food provider,I wanted it that way, and sub species does depend on the sort of interaction you 're after, no doubt that the Tannies can/will calm down and be freindlier with time, but I'm not sure{never owned one}as to the cuddleability long term, I'm sure you're already addicted and will be found by what ever skink needs you at the show, best of luck, "Skink E.S.P. will provale"

BOWIE IS RO RAD!

Postby megaabel » Wed Sep 05, 2007 6:12 am

Bowie, is so cute and cool!!! I reallly want one just like him. :)

I am not afraid of the hissing, but I think my boyfriend will.....hehehe

I was wondering... does he pee only once, when you begin to hold him... or does he pee the entire time you hold him several times?

I am thinking about making him litter box on my balcony w/grass and all! ;) We'll see... do they prefer to pee or poo on grass or rocks or shavings?

sometimes if they need to go they will go...
when bowie is out and i figure that he is still nervous he goes. one sudden gush and thats it. they can go inside their enclosure, outside or i guess however they want.
boris goes right beside his water bowl in his cage.

My tanny used to pee every time I removed her from her enclosure. I had it down to a science. Pick her up. Hold her over the enclosure. Let her pee. Good to go! She has since broken that habit.

Here's my sweetie, Pandora. She came from Andrew. Tanimbars are so shiny compared to the others.
