Digging is normal, it's what they do.
However for blueys new to the outdoors, digging can sometimes mean they are trying to bury themselves to get away because they're scared.

If he's just moseying on along and digging and sniffing and all that, then let him go. If he looks like his digging in a mad panic to hide, then he may be a little stressed out and you can either provide him with shelter outside or take him back in.

As said let them dig in the mud, keep an eye out for them eating stones, he doesnt look stressed out so I reckon there was a big fat worm he was after, nice photos, and a tongue shot, they love the great out doors especially when its sunny.

I agree with Lisa. My guys dug frantically at first because they were scared and overwhelmed by all the scents, sounds, and sights of the great outdoors. I would hold them or give them things to hide under. Now, when we go out, they dig occasionally but not with the same intensity. Like Leigh said, watch for rocks. My older bluey doesn't ingest many things---but the baby seems content to chow down on anything. My guys get out at the same time every day. They know when it is time to get out and they start roaming their tanks and climbing up on the glass. Obviously, the great outdoors is now fun for them. Free UVB rays are a bonus. Also, mine tend to potty when they are out. Definitely a bonus for Mom! Have fun but keep an eye on them. They can disappear quickly into the grass. You don't want them stepped on or gone forever! Love the pix!
