BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

i am going to get my first bts soon and i would realy like some advice about which type would be best for a my first skink

i cant really say ones better than the other, but i can say that some are more expensive then others. i think the most practical are the northerns, the irian jayas and indonesian

You'll probably want one that is easy to handle, so your best options are Northern, Eastern, or Irian Jaya. I'd avoid most other species you've gotten to play with them and they're very nice, and avoid pet store animals as they are often Wild Caught. You'll want a Captive Bred skink, so that you don't have to worry about wild-agression or parasites for your first little one. If you want a perfect little baby, I'd strongly suggest the breeders on this site. I've heard that Zach's babies are so nice they're generally tame right out of the shipping container, which would make them great for a beginner. I'm sure the other breeders are just as good, and it's not expensive to get such a great quality animal.

By the way, Welcome! Blueys are a great choice and this forum is the perfect place for any bluey lover. Oh, and a bit of advice, the Laws of the Blue state that pictures are often required ^.-

Well mate ,it depends on where in the world you are as to price,type and availability.Fatal's summed it up for you, personally I'd go with the best temperament I could find over looks, but it depends what you want from your freind, breeders {especially the ones here}are generally better than commercial pet stores.

I would definetly recommend a northern, eastern or Irian Jaya. There are a few breeders here on this site that still have babies of those types. Indonesions do not make good first blueys. They tend to be more skitish and less handable. There is also a really good chance that they are wild caught.

I got a Northern as a first time owner. Have been thrilled with her disposition and she has made a wonderful addition to the family.

Also, your best bet is to research this site, (there are very good reliable breeders on here who handle their babies regularly and know the actual birthdates and health status! You can check for availability.) and buy a captive bred skink.
Many pet store skinks are wild caught, and carry parasites! If they're not wild caught, they usually aren't taken proper care of and are kept in enclosures way too small, and they aren't handled on a regular basis. At the very least, they'll need a good Herp Vet check up.

I'm a Northern girl myself. I like them so much that I may be stuck in a rut---but what a nice rut it is! I echo the others who recommend Northerns, Easterns, and IJs. These tend to be the easiest for beginners---if you desire a lap lizard!
If you go with a less reputable source, you may not get the type they claim it is---many stores don't even realize their are different types! Wild caughts are also a possibility---and that could mean major headaches. If you get one from a breeder on this site, you may pay a little more (darned shipping!!) but you will have a higher probability of getting a nice pet. That is important if you consider you might have him for 20 yrs! My Northerns play with my kids and temperment is everything to me!
I have a Peach baby from Zach. She was a little shy but never bitey. She ate her greens/veggies like a champ from day one. I can't tell you how many threads I've read about new baby problems---I'm almost a little let down that she has been such a sweetie. And, poor Zach has probably regreted the "unlimited advice" clause that comes with any bluey sale. That comes in handy for newbies---especially neurotic owners such as myself!
