Snail Housing

So ... I'm thinking about getting a several of snails and putting them in my 30 gal. aquarium with the two plecos that live there. :chin:

The Plecos are in there alone because they are kinda large. If the snails survive the quarantine is it o.k. to feed Tattoo snails housed in this manner? :paranoid:

Don't want to feed my baby food from the wrong side of the tracks.

Petsmart and Petco will give you free pest snails. You can buy mystery snails in some states. Watch the chemicals (no ick meds, etc.) and I think you should be fine. You'll know the ones you've raised are safer than the ones from contaminated creeks, etc. If you search this site, you can find info on breeding apple/mystery snails (see links) or info about snails from old threads. Note: Most snails are hermaphrodites but apples are not!

Thanks for the info. Have raised snails before but viewed them as pets ... not food. Figure if I get a bunch I won't get personal with them and then feel terrible when I offer them up to the Skink Goddess as a treat. :bow1:

I gave Pryce a snail on monday and he adored it, but we noticed something odd...a whole bunch of little snails. I'm keeping the second snail and a few of the rescued babies in my fish tank to see if I can get some sort of colony going. Does anyone know if snails are okay with a betta in the tank?

My information says that betta fish will go after snails. :uhhhh:

They will eat small ones and pick at large ones. I have always housed my pet snails away from bettas for that reason. I guess if they are going to be lunch anyway it is worth a try. If your betta is rather placid and well fed the big ones will probably be fine. The babies snails might be another story. :nervous:

Hey there Tattoo, dont go overloading the tank with too many snails, you probably already know but they'll eat all the plec's algae, and can put an extra strain on your filtration system, coz they can poo some......

Hey Leigh ... yup ... only got 5 small ones and I figure someone will be eating a couple pretty soon. I feed my pleco's algae wafers so there will be plenty of food to go around. And the poo ... I hear that. I vaccume and partial water change weekly but man do those snail bundles pile up. :shock:
