My first shingleback!

Postby Lura » Tue Sep 18, 2007 7:10 am

Okay, I wasn't sure if this really warranted its own topic as I only have two pictures to go along with it, but I think the story is at least mildly amusing.

So if you read my little post in the Off-Topic thread, I saw my first Eastern about six days ago and it made me waaaay more excited than it should. After seeing that the Easterns had started to wake up, I have been very excited at the prospect of seeing a shingleback. I am currently on a two week semester break and I have spent the last four days in Perth. Today I went on a day trip to the Pinnacles, located north of the city.

After we had left the Pinnacles we were driving on a dirt road in the middle of the desert toward these sand dunes. I happened to be sitting up front with the guide, who was really nice. I was watching the road in front of us, and I saw something moving. Suddenly my brain realised what it was, and I started literally flailing my arms about.

'SHINGLEBACK!!!' I yelled. The guide looked at me. 'Bobtail, sleepy lizard, stumpy-tail!!' I exclaimed, to emphasize the urgency of the situation. Then: 'PLEASE CAN WE STOP THE BUS SO I CAN LOOK AT IT??'

And what do you know, he did. Perhaps he was frightened; I don't know. Needless to say, it was a beautiful lizard, but was most definitely NOT happy about having a camera shoved in its face as it was trying to leisurely make its way across the road. The guide kept telling me not to get hit by a car, and the group of Japanese tourists that was with us were very excited once they saw the lizard, too.

And just to keep this interesting for people who don't want to read all the text, here are some pictures of a small Eastern who lives right outside my room in Adelaide.

Shinglebacks AND Japanese tourists? You have it made. 8)

My bf is going to Sydney for a business trip in two weeks. The first question I asked is if there's any chance at all that he can get out of the city to look for skinkies. The answers were "no" and ":oi:".

When we went on a cruise to mexico I was reptile crazy too. I wanted to go in the jungles but noone would take us they said mosquitos were too bad. I did see a dumb islander try to catch a black iguana for me and he pulled its tail off. (I coulda done that) anyways first tail i held while it was still wiggling
