My New Babies! (DUW)

Postby Fatal_S » Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:45 am

Yesterday I got my two new baby skinkers! While attempting a quick feed and introducing them to their new home I made sure to take many pictures. Introducing:

I'm loving my new babies, and can't wait until they're settled in and I can start playing with them. They're so small! I knew they'd be smaller than Pryce (14") but not the size of a gecko! They're adorable, and the pictures just dont do them justice. The colors are already remarkable, and I know they'lol just keep getting better. Tannies! Me: :cloud9: Thanks for looking!

These are Andrew babies. The yellow one has such an amazing orange coloring already, and the silver is very light. The markings are beautiful but it's the colors that I'm so amazed by. Just wow.

Well so far both the babies are settling in and are totally terrified of me. Wocket was out earlier and slowly ambled into hiding, but Trikks is very skittish and bolts as soon as I'm in sight. Both are just being left alone for now so they can get used to their lives. They were cooler and fairly calm yesterday, but I'm sure they'll be upset when I go to play with them later this week ^.^ Andrews skinks are indeed a stunning bunch.

Fang is a lesser european house spider, aka: common house spider. I found her in my basement when my sisters were trying to squish her. I like her webs so I made her a nice place to live, and she's just for looking at.

Wocket is currently hiding, but Trikks is out. He bolted at first, but now he's climbing on the fake plants and keeping an eye on me as I watch him. He is soo cute! I love tannies ^.^

I'd like to say I'm having a very rough night. To start with, an hour ago I was woken up by some banging around coming from the direction of the tanks. I got up and took a look, and Pryce had decided to squeeze through the gap in the glass and wall into where the lights are kept. I knew the heat is off, so I wasn't worried, but I was still peeved at being woken. I moved him back to his place and put a temporary block up. He'd done this before so I went and got more wire today to block it off, but I didn't have time to install it. It will go in tomorrow, and haha to him. He wasn't impressed with being caught, and huffed up, but behaved well enough.

Then, as if that wasn't enough, I was just woken by a large bang. I quickly went to the tank, and sure enough, now Trikks light is off its perch (keeping it at an angle so it heats the basking rock). I'm pretty sure there's not enough gap for Trikks to get in there, but I wasn't about to stick my hand in to find out. So after a quick search of the lighting area, he's nowhere to be found, so I righted the lamp and all is well. I guess it just chose tonight to fall -.-'

Working with my cages, home built and designed by me, I've now decided there's a few things I'm going to change on the next ones. 1) I want the cage itself to be bigger, 6x2x1 so the tanks will work for all sizes. 2) The sliding glass front is going. I find it frightens the guys when I slide it, and I'm not happy bout that. Instead I'm going to make doors that open down, and have a seperate one per side of tank. 3) The built-in hide works great! ...for the lizards -.-' They have a safe hide where I have to work very hard to get at them. No good. Next time the lights will be suspended but still have a cover.

The end result of these tank changes? I'm stealing Zachs tank design. Well that's all (please, God, let that be all). Hopefully I can get some sleep tonight. I plan to play with all my herps tomorrow (only a feeding for the newbs), as well as the tanks mods and cleaning Pryce's, so I need some sleep. Thank you all and goodnight.

I got peed on today! ^.^ I took the babies our for food, and Trikks took a leak on me. Both were very scared and huffy, but neither tried to bite. Wocket is actually easier to handle, as Trikks is very skittish and bolts amazing fast. However in their tanks Wocket hides all the time, while Trikks is slowly getting used to me and sits on his plants. Both babies managed to eat some food, Wocket ate more, but Trikks took a poo. It's so small when they're young ^.^ I love these little guys.

Pryce now cannot access his lights due to a wire guard. He still huffs, but he's becoming as tame as Cow. I love the huge size difference. I still don't know how old Pryce is (anyone wanna guess?) but he's 14". Hopefully tonight will be all quiet!

Yere there brilliant at getting out , more handling things will slot into normality ...Something ive picked up from years of been pssst on is they seem afraid of the fall . So settle your skink with an open hand and wrist,so they feel like its solid ground , Crikey used to put her arms out like a parachute jumper , got the pics some were ...Even she has stoped doing it .And i find the sound of your voice = might be going up for a ride , gets them used to being picked up , its fear really IMO why they take a leak or dump all there water down your shirt. Try gentle strokes on the head & shoulder area , on the lounge when watching TV ...So to help with settling and bonding & knowing your voice is a safe thing ..My wife calls out who ya talking to, but i find they look up or out and lick and drool at the sound of our voice . They really love to snuggle in behind your kneck .. I find it lets em know alls calm ... good onya
All the best mate

Sounds like regular Tanimbar behavior to me. :edward:

How did you get Andrew's babies in Canada?? How much did it cost?? I've always avoided it because I thought it was more trouble than it would be worth, but maybe it's not....

Hi guys. I lost internet for a while, but I'm back now.

First, the skink report: Trikks, the yellow, seems to come out of hiding much more often than Wocket. Trikks can often be found on the basking tile or in the plants. However Trikks is also more skittish, and will hide the instant I touch the glass. Trikks tends to huff a lot once out, will not stay still, will pee many times each time she is out. She has also tried to lunge at my fingers a few times, but with her mouth closed, and she has never displayed or bitten. Trikks has not yet eaten much food.

Wocket, the silver, is rarely seen in his tank, hiding in the bedding under the warm hide most of the day. Sometimes he ventures out, at which point he will amble back into hiding if I show up. When taken out of the tank, Wocket is fairly calm, will sit still, and only huff a moderate amount. He is willing to be petted under the chin or on top of the head if I show him my hand first. He huffs somewhat but doesn't lunge or display or bite. He also eats well.

Pryce is doing well, still eating great and generally being very handleable. He will be going with me to a daycare tommorow to visit the children, as will Cow. I'll get pictures and give a report on that in a new thread.

I'm very happy with my little guys. And maybe if I can get enough money, I can get some feeders (maybe some pink tongues too) at the show next weekend.

Zach - I've sent a PM on shipping to Canada.

I got it, thanks for the info.

I'm attaching this note to my posts: I know everyone is getting the "Could not insert new word matches" error; but the posts still seem to be going through (so don't retry or we'll get more double posts!). New threads can't be created right now, and I'm not sure why yet. :? By the way, where the heck is the off topic thread?? It seems to have disappeared.... :paranoid:
