New BTS owner - Greetings!

Postby angusthefuzz » Tue Sep 25, 2007 2:02 pm

Hello all,
I have been lurking on the forum for a few weeks now and I thought it was finally time to introduce my skink. I heard there was a rule about posting pictures  Say hello to my northern BTS Thor. Thor is 5 weeks old and 35 grams. I purchased him at a local reptile show from a breeder who seemed to know what he was talking about. I have had Thor for two weeks now and his enclosure is finally finished after some tweaking (and I was able to take some pictures). I had started with a thick layer of carefresh but it seemed like he was having trouble moving on top of the substrate and hiding excessively, so I switched to paper towel until he gets a bit larger and his legs can reach the floor of the cage through the substrate. Also, I built his enclosure from scratch and it is 30"x30"x30" (he is a little more than 5" long). With the thick substrate, it was really difficult to find him for any kind of interaction. Overall, the temps are great (103 for the basking and anywhere from 75-85 in the rest of the enclosure) and he is eating really well). But I would love to hear your comments. Thanks for providing all the great information!

Awwwww, he's teeny tiny! What a cutelet, and what a cool set up! Can he make it up that ramp though? My guy would be pin-wheeling his little arms and legs and probably going nowhere, like pushing a boulder uphill! :D

The ramp is at a 30 degree angle and initially all he could do was keep himself from sliding if placed on the ramp. But, after coating the ramp with nylon screen, his little claws are able to get a hold and he moves up the ramp with great speed. He had to be trained to use the ramp with a little bit of "banana motivation" I think the only thing the care sheet is missing is detailed climbing data for various surfaces. :P

Welcome! What a cool looking Northern....

My only concern with the setup is the high platform -- I'm afraid he could hurt himself falling, or even jumping off! Otherwise, I love it!

Nice job there mate, dont worry about him not being able to reach the bottom through the substrate, going sub-terranium is what they do best
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

I thought the same thing. Awesome enclosure, and cute skinkie!! Just be careful with the height. These are ambitious little buggers and he may not realize that he could get hurt jumping off of there. Is there a way to lower the platform? Good luck! He's a cutie patootie!
