Hello to all the members out there on BTS.net. I recently picked up my first skink, a Northern and he's definitely a cool little thing. I stumbled upon him by chance while I was out looking for Bearded Dragons. He was sitting in a cage all by himself and just looked so much fuller and healthier than the little beardies jumping around. The store owner definitely wasn't too knowledgeable about what type he is, but I was told he's a Northern. I'll have to post up a few pictures of him, but he definitely exhibits all the traits that would make him so. I took the advice of a few skink sites and made sure that he was in great physical condition. One thing that I did notice was that he has a couple short toes on his left hind leg, nothing big I presume because he's doing just fine otherwise. He's 8 months old, or atleast that's what the paperwork says from the time he was brought in to the store, til the time that I purchased him. This site has definitely been a huge help in making my decision to buy him and now I just need to get him set on a good diet. I was told not to feed him mice or things like that. The store owner had been feeding him chicken bite every Monday as a treat. Due to the chicken, he now doesn't enjoy eating mealworms, so I have no idea how to get him back on track. Oh well, he's fine as is for now and there will be tons of time for improvement down the line.

Welcome. Can't wait to see pics of your new little guy. Oh, and for food, mealworms aren't a great item, cooked chicken is healthier. The caresheet on this site has some great food charts to show the healthiest food for your skinker. And there's a thread called "What's on the menu today?" that gives may examples of great food choices.

Today was a pretty productive one for Sanchez and I. I managed to find a 55 gal tank for a steal so I couldn't pass it up. After reading the food menues in here I definitely had to rework his diet. I'm still a little mixed on the cat and dog foods, but his veggies and fruits are all chopped and frozen for quick and healthy meals each day. His fauna and substrate got a new touch as well. All that's left is to put it all together and move him into his new home.
