Question about skinks and travel.

Hey folks.. here's a question that may become relevant to me in the future and has been popping around in my mind:

If I were to move to Europe, say Italy, for a year to teach with my girlfriend, how difficult would it be to take the skinks with me - AND/OR - what are some things to consider?

Best thing to do is check with the countries import laws, you can google it. some airlines will let you take them onboard, but each plane and country is different.

If you need help moving your skink, contact someone from www.ipata.com. They specialize in knowing how to move family pets across borders. A customs broker is also a great help. Both cost money but will save a lot of work and stress. But if you'll only be going for a year, you could also try to get a babysitter for that time, if you could stand to part with them.

Yeah I was thinking babysitter, but I don't know if any of my potential babysitters would want to foster 3 skinks and their big cages.

If anything, I'd suggest a forum member, as you want someone who knows about BTS and how to care for them. If you ask around, someone on the forum may be able to take them for the year. Once you already have one or 2, caring for more isn't much harder. If you do get an off-forum babysitter, make sure they definately know what they're getting into, what to do, and have them check out the forum too. Oh, and if I could, I'd babysit them no problemo. You have adorable little skinks.

Oh, and keep in mind taking kinks from the US may be only a bit of work, but bringing them back will likely be a BIG hassle. USA has some very strict laws for imports.

I'd honestly love to, but I don't know how feasable it would be for you. You can't fly the skinks in, you'd have to ship them to near the border (Pembina, ND is where my tannies were shipped), then I'd have to bring them over. The tanks wouldn't be a problem, I'm having many built custom for me, either 8 or 10 to start with. The problem is bringing them back to the US, as I think I'd need an export license or you'd need an import license. I do plan to get this eventually though. If you run out of options downstairs, we can try to work something out.

Australia ya cant bring in anything beans , seeds even wood carvings are givin lethal doses of radiation ...So i would contact and learn as much as you can about there laws //Better let them stay stable with Jenn IMO ..Alot of guys find luggage out at the airport . And there outa your control they could get crushed under other parcels . no way josey alot of baggage loaders are crooked in my country . ask my old man about Jimmy ,he stamped cleared on any package for 500$ . then he was killed by asian mafia post office worker ..had 3 homes a mazzarati ...safe with Jenn

Well thanks Jenn! You may be a huge solution for us. If we do decide to do a tour in italy for a year, I would feel better leaving them with someone experienced instead of say, a family member. Plus, taking them with me would be tough and might hamper a lot of travel plans I may have once we get there.

I will definitely let you know how our decision making goes as far as Italy.

Yeah, hopefully if I go- when I come back I will have my own place and be able to do something like that. I'm sure they would get spoiled!
